HOw do you guys feel about this book. I first heard about this book from the FRIENDS episode where Joey did a dramatic reading of it for Rachel's baby and I always liked the part that repeats " I'll love you forever...like you for always... as long as I'm living my baby you'll be" But I'd never acttually read the whole book until I had my baby and starting seriously researching baby books and after reading the whole book online I realized the storyline is kinda odd..

We got it as a gift and DH & I joked about how it's like the Mom is almost a stalker driving across town with a ladder strapped to her car and climbing in windows.
Then we talked about how sad it is in the end. DD seems to like it so we still read it to her but its not our favorite. -
I can't get past the creepy scene where the mom climbs in her son's window with a ladder. It starts off pretty cute though

i read it for the first time when i was a teenager & was babysitting & the kiddo asked me to read it- i got all chocked up! so friggin sad! i agree that it's kinda odd, but it really does bring to light the circle of life & the tradition of passing things on to our children & caring for those who have cared for us. beautiful & creepy, i can see both in it.

DH read it with his mom a lot when he was younger.
When we were in kindergarten, all the classes did a "play" and each class was a "time period." DH's class portrayed the marriage scene (DH was the preacher) and my class all dressed up as old people. It was super cute!

I can't read that book, I start balling every time! It was a favorite that my MIL read to my husband when he was a kid, so she gave us his copy with the sweetest inscription at my shower- I broke down reading it.
So he gets to read it to our son, I can't do it.

I read it once when I worked at a daycare and couldn't get over the last few pages (picture your daycare teacher sobbing at pick-up... awkward). It's way too sad for me. I got a copy of the book at my baby shower, but it's tucked away in the closet and I can't bring myself to read it to my daughter.

I read it a couple of days ago and thought it was odd. :T I especially thought the part where the mom climbs in her grown son's window to rock him to sleep was really.. wtf? o.O

I love this book! I never thought it was creepy but maybe that's because my mom read it to me as a child. I always assumed the mother crawling in the window as an exaggeration just to keep the story going. But it never fails to make me cry!

DEPRESSING MUCH?? LOL I am surprised to hear people say it was one of their favorites when they were kids... I always thought this was one of those books that parents love and little kids hate. Give me a nice didactic Berenstain Bears any day of the week!

I loooooved it growing up and almost every time I read it, I cry. My mom cries everytime too! It's always been a favorite of ours. I will read it to LO. My mom quotes it all the time, "I'll love you forever, I'll like you for always, as long as I'm living my baby you'll be."
I guess I never thought of it as creepy or depressing.

I remember when it was read for "storytime" on moms days when DS was in kindergarten.... Totally creeped me out! *shudder* lol

@ktdid23: AND now I find out the song came out of the birth of two dead babies. This is too sad. This cements my opinion of this book as too sad for us. It's a sweet idea but I like to keep it light at storytime!
