I love laughing cow light cheeses, so I need another low cal thing to spread it on. Veggies aren't an option since I'm allergic to celery and carrots. Maybe cucumber, but I don't think it's crunchy enough.

kale chips?? I don't really know...maybe some of those nut thin crackers?
blogger / watermelon / 14218 posts
@looch: yeah, allergic to bell peppers too... I miss those!!
blogger / watermelon / 14218 posts
@autumnlove: I'm allergic to jicama too!! gahhh!!
I'm gonna look through the cracker aisle tonight... nut thin crackers, gluten free crisps, rice cakes...
I also couldn't stand kale chips when I tried them... such a disappointment because I thought that would be awesome. Although, maybe the cheese will block out the kale taste!

@kiddosc: I know The worst is that I wasn't allergic to a single thing until my 20s! I really miss apples!!
cantaloupe / 6171 posts
we eat a lot of wasa crackers--they're a little heartier/more filling and healthier than your standard cracker! we eat them with laughing cow all the time

@mrs. wagon: we spread it on corn tortillas and turn it into a laughing cow quesadilla... i did this when we ran out of shredded cheese once and DD wanted quesadillas. it's a hit!

@mrs. wagon: I have no insight for you but I'm curious about your allergy? Does it have to do with pollen count on the veggies/fruits?
blogger / watermelon / 14218 posts
@pui: @anonysquire: I ate it off the knife today! delicioso.
@babycanuck: It is called Oral Allergy Syndrome.. I get a reaction to any fruits or vegetables who have a cross-reaction with the type of pollen I am allergic to, which is birch pollen. I can eat any of these foods if they are well-cooked, but raw I get a reaction. I once ate a salad containing jicama (had no idea what it was or that I was allergic to it! it's basically like raw potato!) and I almost went to the hospital! The insides of my mouth and my tongue all swelled up and I couldn't talk! But I could still breathe, so I waited it out and the swelling went down.
bananas / 9899 posts
@mrs. wagon: Ah interesting!! I have a similar reaction to raw bananas, but I can still eat banana bread/muffins. Never occurred to me that it could be a pollen allergy.
blogger / watermelon / 14218 posts
@pui: totally possible! According to wikipedia it could be a cross reaction with birch or ragweed:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oral_allergy_syndrome
I have a birch pollen allergy, but I can eat bananas! and avocados, and strawberries. But the other birch items I cannot eat: almonds, apples, apricots, carrots, celery, cherries, chicory, coriander, fennel, fig, hazel nuts, kiwifruit, nectarines, parsley, parsnips, peaches, pears, peppers, plums, potatoes, prunes, soy, strawberries, wheat; Potential: walnuts. Funny because a lot of these things I've never noticed a reaction to, but it's because they're not commonly eaten raw... like potato, or coriander.
There are actually a few items on the ragweed list I can't eat either: cantaloupe and honeydew.

Wow...that would be the worst kind of allergy for me since I mostly eat veggie! What about the Wasa crackers or Nutthins? I love tomoatoes and cucumbers so I would probably eat those as well. Maybe watermelon? No idea how that would taste with cheese though as I can't eat dairy! lol.

@mrs. wagon: Woah. That is a serious list. I am so sorry.
What about cucumber?

I used to eat laughing cow and cucumber all of the time. Makes me want to go out and get some!

I love the Brown Rice snaps in the vegetable flavor and I think it is only 60 calories for 8. They are great with sharp cheddar cheese too. Double check the ingredients though, they might have peppers in them.

@bpcmarj: @mrslibrarian: I think cucumber might work, but I'm afraid it won't be crunchy enough for me!
@Cole: that sounds awesome-- do you find those at your grocery store? I can eat the peppers if they're cooked or processed in any way, just not raw!

@ mrs. wagon - this! everyone always looks at me like I'm crazy when I tell them about this - but I get this reaction from mangos and it didn't show up until my 20s. Mine is not nearly as extended as yours - that must really suck. Sorry.
Curiously, it's only the red mangos that are commonly found in the US. I can eat the yellow ones that my ILs grow at their house. Maybe try different varieties?
kiwi / 659 posts
My DH just puts the whole thing in his mouth, which I think is gross lol. Bell peps or rice cakes sound good... I love laughing cow cheeeese!!!
blogger / watermelon / 14218 posts
@stine_ciro: could be that the US mangos are cross reacting with pollen that does not exist at your IL's house!
Yep, my allergy didn't show up until I started noticing reactions with foods one by one in my 20s. I've tried (and accidentally tried) to test different kinds of fruits/veggies with no success. For me, the reaction is annoying enough to just accept it and avoid the foods. I miss apples so much but I eat a ton of grapes now!

@mrs. wagon: They are usually in the organic section at our local grocery store, Whole Foods and our other health food stores carry them too. They have a few other flavors as well but I haven't tried them yet.

I like rice crackers though I'm not sure how the calorie intake is compared to regular crackers.

LOVE it with prezel chips and pita chips. Also what abotu zucchini chips?

I am the same!! I react to apples, pineapple, nuts and gluten. I eat gluten free crackers or the glutino bagel chips with mY soft cheese!!
pomegranate / 3105 posts
@mrs. wagon: I think my sister has this, but doesn't know the name. It's a cross pollination with the way tree nuts grow for her. She totally misses apples, too. It makes her whole mouth go numb, and she's had some weird reactions from cutting fruit up for her kids and not washing her hands before rubbing her eyes.
