@littlejoy: does your network have a High Risk Breast Clinic? You could look into something like that. The one I work at usually does biannual appointments, with recommended rotation of mammogram and breast MRI. They also offer genetic testing; depending on your risk factors insurance covers it sometimes, otherwise they have a negotiated cash price with the company we use.

It's not only for people with immediate family history either, we see a lot of women with "dense breast tissue" or prone to cysts.

Also our breast center has different foundations that do financial aid for biopsies, imagining, and additional monitoring.

@littlejoy: Same as others, I’m high risk and get screened 2x per year. I also get cysts pretty regularly. My cysts tend to come and go over the course of one menstrual cycle, so the oncologist I see told me that if anything persists for more than 6 weeks to call off cycle, but that the reason they screen every six months is that most breast cancers grow slowly enough that six months would catch almost any new cancers before they progress very far. Which is not to say that more aggressive growth can’t happen, just that it’s pretty rare. I guess I’m just saying if you don’t feel like you can afford screening, check yourself regularly and know what’s normal for you but that it can change and even when that happens it’s probably not cancer.

I have been deemed to have "dense" breast tissue. I am not sure if that qualifies for anything but after seeing this post I will ask my prim dr at my next visit!!!
