At work, we have a cashless cafeteria in our building. You either load money onto your badge or pay with a credit card. Usually there's an option that will automatically reload your card when the balance reaches a certain point, but it hasn't been working very well lately.
While I was in line on Friday, the guy in front of me scanned his badge, and the cashier stopped him to let him know that he didn't have enough money loaded. He was super nice about it, and just let the guy know that he couldn't let him leave with the food unless he paid for it. The guy (who I didn't know) was also cool and just asked if he could leave his stuff there to run back down a few floors to grab a credit card. It's all just so silly, so I told him to put it on my tab. I knew I had enough money on my card and paid for his $6 lunch.
The guy must have grabbed my name from the cashier and emailed me today to thank me and now wants to treat me to lunch. I let him know that it wasn't necessary, but to pay it forward. He insisted on treating me. Should I go? I feel a little uncomfortable...I paid for his lunch and didn't have a second thought about it and certainly don't want or need to be paid back. What would you do?
I think you should let him. He obviously feels bad/embarrassed. How would you feel if the tables were turned? I would feel like I need to repay them.
