we get so much more use out of the duplo right now than the magformers. I think at 2 the interest in making shapes isn't as there yet, but the make believe that happens with the doors and houses we make with the duplo is great.

I would still do duplos! We have the big farm set that DD still loves at 3. I agree with @maddyz that there is lots of opportunity for creative play with them at that age.

My 2yo loves duplos (and his sisters's tiny legos). He does more magformers when sister helps. Not so much by himself.

@maddyz: @bhbee: Shoot. Sorry if my post wasn't clear! I was wondering about magnatiles not magformers.

Duplo! My 5 year old still plays with his (as well as the smaller legos). We have magnatiles too and he didn't really get into the until closer to 3.5.

WE decided to skip the duplo's and will go straight to the little legos. So for age 2 we did the magnatiles which I think are pretty similar to magformers

My 3yo plays independently with Duplo every single day and has for a year or more. We don't have any Magnatiles so I can't compare, but we love our Duplos!

@Coral: Magnatiles. My oldest likes them both, but the Magnatiles are played with so much more often. Also, I think Magnatiles grow with your kiddos as well ( as compared to Duplos which are typically replaced with Legos or other building sets/materials).

Duplos are so easy to find used or free on places like CL, so I would get some that way and buy magnatiles.

We have both (DD is almost 3) and at that age I'd say Duplos. She got those when she was 1 and could play with them by 1.5 at least. She got her Magnatiles at 2 years 4 months and took to them pretty well, but I'm not sure if she would have been quite as interested at barely 2. These days she plays with them both equally though.

I feel like our magna-tiles would have gotten more use if we had a light table.
I know people tend to be all over the concept of open-ended toys, but my son does a lot better (especially in independent play) when he has a "set" to build rather than a bunch of blocks. Where he gets creative is after he builds the piece, he takes it apart and reconstructs it.

We got Magnatiles at 3, and at 3.5, she's obsessed with them. Granted, her blocks have been put away for a few months, but she hasn't asked for them at all.

Both of mine were much more interested in duplos. Neither really took to magnatiles/magnaformers. My almost 5yo son still plays with duplos and now also loves the small Legos

Love duplos! For each of my kids, I bought sets that related to their interest at the time (LO1 - trains, LO2 - construction vehicles). Our sets of duplos get regular play between both of my kids, who are 6 and 3.

Magnatiles. We bought Duplos for my son and they have been such a waste. We play with his "maglets" every day and build tons of stuff. I just ordered another set for my nephew on Amazon Daily Deals!

Both my kids (4.5 and 13 months) love duplo and my 4.5yo loves magnatiles too...I'd go duplo for an almost 2yo though.

My guy is 19 months and loves both! He probably plays with the megablocks more. We just have a small magnatiles set that we take with us to restaurants and plane trips, which work great. We keep them in a little pouch.
ETA: just noticed you asked about duplos. My mind went right to megablocks. Now I'm looking at all the cool duplos!

They're both great, but this age will get way more use and enjoyment out of duplo. You can buy magna tiles later! I bought them for my 3.5 and 5 year old neice and nephew and it was perfect timing. And my nephew is now 4 and still quite enjoys duplo, mega blocks, and now lego. They last a while.

My 20 month old loves duplos. They keep her occupied for a long time. She doesn't really get magnatiles yet.

My 2.5yo son loves his Magnatiles! I love playing with them with him, too; it's so fun seeing how creative he gets with them. He got them for Christmas, right around when he turned two.
We don't have duplos for him at home, but he has some at my gym childcare that he loves playing with, too. And he does like little legos, too.
I don't think you can go wrong! I voted Magnatiles, because my son loves his so much, but I will say that they are expensive!! So keep that in mind if you think you'll want to buy more/expand, etc. We are lucky and people bought them for my son as gifts, but just something to keep in mind.

Thank you everyone for your help! I decided to go with duplos for now since he loves imaginative play (like the little people houses.) Maybe I can suggest that a relative gives him magnatiles for christmas.

Magnatiles, we just gave away most of our Duplos since neither kid has ever shown any interest in them.
Both of mine prefer the Lego Juniors for Lego type stuff (3 and 5 year old boys. With Magnatiles they spend hours using them and involve my husband playing with them, so it's a total win although they cost more to purchase.
