Whoa, awesome! I live in Freeport, about 20 minutes north of Portland but lived in Portland for almost 10 years. Both MMC and Mercy are great hospitals, if that's where your husband landed a job!

I was born and raised in southern Maine! My sister lives in South Portland and my parents live in Yarmouth (a little suburb north of Portland). DH and I get back to visit as much as we can. We love it up there!!
Are you moving there for work? Do you know where in Portland you'll be? The public schools vary greatly in that area- it might be worth it to check out living in one of the suburbs for better school districts. There are lots of great places to live just outside the city that are a very easy commute in. I think your LO is still pretty young but it's something to think about.
Enjoy... I'm slightly jealous. We dream about being able to move back up there some day!

@rachiecakes: which one? U Maine? We are excited! @yoursilverlining: he's going to be working for a private Ortho group in Portland but will operate at both of those hospitals! I love Freeport and after a year in Taos nm, am excited for some outlet shopping
@thismustbetheplace: I think we are going to try to live in Falmouth, Yarmouth, or cape Elizabeth based on schools!

@winniebee: Falmouth, Yarmouth, Cape E and Freeport are definitely the best school systems in the Portland area (although the Portland schools are good, too). If you plan on being here for a long time, the Falmouth schools (although top ranked) have some very nasty economic undercurrents between the wealthy (Falmouth “foreside”) and the rest of Falmouth, which is mockingly referred to in the middle and high schools as Falmouth “poorside”. That turned us off from living there, especially since even in the “poorside”, you’re looking at homes $300k, $400k+++
If you want any restaurant recommendations, or specific neighborhood recommendations let me know!!! Portland is such a fantastic food scene; you’ve got really great options.
I would caution against Cape Elizabeth only because I find it frustrating to get in and out of on a commute/daily basis. It’s not that convenient to Portland (compared to Falmouth/Yarmouth), as all the traffic funnels onto one bridge, along with traffic from other towns and then deposits you onto an area that is mad with tourists in the summer. Of course, commute frustration is all relative - - it’s not bad compared to most places. I just dislike that there is no easy highway access from CE.

I'm from Maine, but sadly don't live there now. We are hoping to move there in the next few years. DH and I are both teachers and the pay cut we'd have to take to teach there is a little hard to swallow.
Falmouth and Cape Elizabeth both have great schools. I'm sure Yarmouth does too. I am slightly jealous also....actually a lot jealous.

@winniebee: my cousin lives in Falmouth! She has four boys.. Yup, 4 boys. My college roommate grew up in Cumberland and her parents are still there. She always says she wants to go back to Maine because it's a wonderful place to raise kids! Congrats!!

@yoursilverlining: thanks for the feedback! That's my husbands biggest concern about CE. @JennyG: I didn't know ppl from Maine were so passionate about their state. I love it!
@mrs. wagon: thanks! I've heard great things about Cumberland too though I think it's a little farther?

@winniebee: I'm unsure but she always described it as being just outside Portland
