I am trying to make myself more presentable and put a little more effort into my look. I have a friend whose eye makeup always looks flawless and she credits it to Stila liquid eye pencil. I have a gift card to Sephora and am thinking of purchasing it but am nervous because I don't usually wear eye liner. Will it be too much? Am I better off getting a good quality mascara? I want my eyes to pop but I don't want to look too done up, if that makes sense.
Any other product recommendations?

I'm conservative about liners too, and have tried the stila eye pen, works really well!! 
right now i use a regular mac eye pencil, sephora's eyeshadow palette, benefit's erase paste, diorshow mascara, and shu eyelash curler.

Eyeliner makes a huge difference in how my eyes look as compared to mascara alone. I always wear it because it makes me look less tired and more put together. I say go for it!

I'm terrible with liquid eyeliner so I just use a pencil liner - sometimes a gel liner. But eyeliner does make a huge difference for me because I don't really have thick lashes.

Hmm, I think lining the upper lid (not lower) and a good mascara really makes the eyes pop. I don't think eye liner has to be purchased from sephora though. A good mascara makes a bigger difference - look at Benefit's They're Real mascara. I feel like it's the only wand that makes my eyes pop.

I can't go without eyeliner, and I LOVE liquid eyeliner. You will not look done up at all if you don't make it thick/dramatic. Eyeliner, mascara and lipgloss and you will look put together

I always use eyeliner, but never mascara… I really like gel liners like the Bobbi Brown or Stila ones. They're so much easier to control and has the clean look of a liquid liner but the subtlety of a pencil liner.

Liquid eyeliner takes some practice but it DOES look fabulous. I'm all about it AND a good mascara. I'm also a fan of They're Real mascara. I got a sample tube a couple months ago....it's greeeat

I love the Urban Decay 24-7 glide on pencil. It literally "glides" on which is great for me since I am clueless when it comes to eye makeup! And it comes in a million colors which is awesome. Sephora sells it!
ETA I also use They're Real mascara and love it!

@rahlyrah: they do! They sell sample tubes near the check out (at least at my Sephora) for under $10 if you want to try it

Good eyeliner over good mascara for sure! Mascara has such a short shelf life, I can't justify forking out $$$ for it. I've found high end eyeliners to be longer lasting. I hate looking like a raccoon toward the end of the day. Have fun shopping at Sephora!

I love liquid eyeliner! It stays on all day. I think drawing a thin line on the upper lid and not lining the lower makes it a daytime look. It does take a little practice, but once you get the hang of it it's very easy to apply.

eyeliner probably has the single biggest impact on me, but i'm asian so that's usually the case!
i love gel eyeliners like mac's fluidline. they can do your makeup for you at sephora and you can figure out what you like. i'd just go drugstore with mascara (loreal voluminous is my favorite), and see if you can find an eyeliner you like.
