Mac & Cheese is our usual side starch besides stuffing, so we don't make mashed potatoes. However, mashed potatoes is a great reason to eat more gravy.
Do you always have mashed potatoes?

Yes, I don't like them, but my sister would cry if it wasn't at every holiday! She usually gets a seperate plate JUST for the mashed potoates and gravy!

Always. In fact, if I could only have one side, it would be mashed potatoes. More gravy.

Mashed potatoes are definitely one of the best parts of a thanksgiving meal!

YES!
Most people call Thanksgiving "Turkey Day", I call it "Mashed Potato Day"

Yes, always. One year we went to my in-laws and my MIL made mashed potatoes and no gravy because she doesn't like gravy. We haven't gone there since on a holiday (it is for other reasons, but I like to tell myself it is sticking up for gravy)

Absolutely! I would leave Thanksgiving if they didn't have mashed potatoes! Kidding, obviously - but I do love me some mashed potatoes

I'm seriously considering adding masged potatoes to the menu this year, but my mom thinks its going to be a carb overloar. I add sauteed onions and buttery mushrooms to my mash and turkey ggiblet would be so yummy with it.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: I say make them! People will either take a small serving of each or they'll indulge. Indulging on food on Thanksgiving is totally permissible!

@MsLipGloss: I am not sure we can be friends anymore.
I love love mashed potatoes

I love mashed potatoes, but not at thanksgiving. I prefer stuffing and I don't make it that often during the year.

@Smurfette: I will eat potatoes pretty much any other way but mashed . . . I just can't handle the texture! I make them for DH and guests, but none for me!

Always! Love me some mashed potatoes! Too bad my MIL makes them with a mixer so they sometimes get gummy

@mrsmenow: I make mashed potatoes more ofthen through the year, where I hardly make stuffing, outside of Thanksgiving.

DH's aunt is making potato salad this year so I'm not going to make mashed potatoes.

@mrsmenow: I don't! This year, no mashed potatoes! I am doing mashed sweet potatoes instead.

Always Mac & cheese and mash potatoes. The kids prefer it over the turkey actually.

No mashed potatoes here because we usually have macaroni and cheese and candied yams.

Yes! I have to make 15 lbs for our Thanskgiving dinner this year (for 32 people though!)

Actually I think sweet potatoes are a must-have, so I don't do mashed potatoes also, because that would be potato overload... or maybe it would be potato heaven?

@dagret: Holy moly!
I love mashed potatoes but there usually aren't enough. So my one enormous serving is usually all I get! Ha
wonderful pea / 17279 posts
@rahlyrah: ha ha, mine too!
@mrsjazz: so we are having candied yams, mac & cheese, stuffing, two other veggies... you think mash would be overkill too?
coconut / 8234 posts
@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: Nope. I mean if I had all of those options I might pig out and try them all just because it's Turkey Day. I'm just not used to having it...but I'd try some if it was an option. We always just do gravy over the turkey and stuffing.

For me? No.I prefer au gratin potatoes at Thanksgiving.
But for my husband? Absolutely. If I didn't make them he would be very, very sad.
I say just make them. You can always enjoy leftovers. Eat them as they are, turn them into a shepherd's pie (or turkey version) topping, croquettes, or little breakfast potato patties fried in a skillet.

Mashed potatoes are a non-negotiable staple for thanksgiving, imo. If I had to choose between that and the turkey, I'd take the potatoes.

Usually it's just me, DH, and MIL for Thanksgiving and neither of them like mashed potatoes, so I usually suck it up and go without (I do all the cooking and feel like it's pointless to make another dish with only 3 people). This year, however, my mom is coming too - I am SO excited because this means mashed potatoes are ON!
