Scribble's nursery is upstairs and our bedroom is downstairs. He is a few weeks shorts of six months so we haven't moved him yet. Sleep training is moving at a snail's pace so I think it is time to move him into the nursery whether I want to or not. Do those of you with master down situations just end up using a guest room as your bedroom? I am worried about fire/emergencies mostly...

We have the kids' rooms and a big playroom upstairs, and a master bedroom and guest room/office downstairs. We only have a bathroom on the main level, though, so it was a necessity for DH and I (at least) to be downstairs. Honestly, I kind of like it. The kids can't hear us so they sleep better, and I feel like it's a little safer with them upstairs. In my paranoid mind, I think that if someone broke into the house they'd have to go past our bedroom, up the creaky stairs, and through the loud baby gate to get the kids. We'd have more time to hear/intercept any problems before it could really reach them. But when I have needed to bolt up the stairs (like when DS accidentally toppled the play kitchen on top of himself), I know I can make it up in about 3 seconds flat.

@Mrs. Pen: It is so annoying/awful. I see why it is good for long-term, like for older people who don't want to have to climb stairs. So in that sense it is good for resell value. But for young parents it is the pits.
@Honeybee: I like the way you think. Instead of imagining fires, robbers is a better way to think! Haha, no really that actually does help. We are thinking of dismantling the dining room to make into a play area....UGH. I actually think I am going to make Scribbles' room Montessori-style to try and avoid my other irrational fear, which is furniture toppling. Are there any rooms upstairs that you worry about the kids having access to? Sounds like maybe the playroom and the bedroom is the extent of it, which would be nice. We have a bathroom upstairs which is kinda scary to think he could be up there getting into trouble/danger alone.....UGH!! -
We are now on a different floor (living in MIL's house temporarily) and I honestly think it's been great. I think DS has night terrors that wake me up but not him. Now we can BOTH sleep through them. Phew!
It is very very close to the stairs (and he is too small to open the door himself) so I'm not worried about safety.
Not sure what the fire safety issue is--how is it different on different floors?
It is like 30 steps (including the stairs) from my spot in bed to DS's crib.Can he topple furniture? Do you have a sound monitor?

@pastemoo: I think I have this idea of a fire starting downstairs and me valiantly running up the stairs to rescue him, then having to go back down into a now-larger fire. Sorry to be so graphic! I guess if we were all on the top floor I could just jet across the hallway, grab him, and go?
Clearly a ranch would have been the smartest option!

@pastemoo: oh and he isn't crawling yet so toppling isn't a big concern, but in a few weeks we are going to do a big babyproofing weekend. Searching for deals as we speak!

@Mrs. Sketchbook: They're rooms and the playrrom are it, so I don't have any concerns of them being upstairs alone. I don't think they can toppls any furniture except the play kitchen, whicj we learned when Ds tried to climb in the oven.
For the bathroom, can you put a door handle cover on it until he's old enough to be trusted?

@Mrs. Sketchbook: Get a fire blanket and fire ladder so if the fire is too bad to go back downstairs you just throw the ladder down and climb out.
Hopefully that will make you feel safer.As to the other concerns, I have no idea why I am not worried--I am such a worried usually.
