Help! I have mastitis and the duct that is clogged is being stubborn. I've tried heat, massage, pumping, hand expressing, drinking water etc. any other ideas?

I had one that didn't resolve until I found the tiniest milk blister on my nipple that I had to open. It had been so small I was sure it wasn't anything - but sure enough, things spurted away! And now every once in a while it will get clogged with some dried milk and I have to clean it out. I've heard exfoliating in the shower regularly helps. I also just started taking lecithin. Good luck! Oh, use a rice sock for warm compressing - it's great!

@MrsKoala: my doctor recommended sunflower lecitihin .. I think you can find it at health food stores.. I haven't tried it yet

@MenagerieMama: I had that all the freakin time when I was nursing DS! It was annoying! After each pumping session, I made sure I hand expressed as much as I could. It seemed to help. Otherwise, I had to squeeze/hand express super duper hard till I heard a "pop" noise which meant the little bit of dried milk cleared. It hurt so bad, but the relief was amazing. I also took sunflower lecithin.

Thanks for the lecithin suggestion! I asked my husband to pick some up. This clog is killing me. It's so painful!

After a long hot shower, rub your nipples with a washcloth or towel. Rub as much dried milk and old skin as you can. This last bout of mastitis I had a chunk come off and I swear it looked like a hole in my nipple but milk started shooting out and the clog finally cleared! Lecithin really helps to prevent - I take it religiously!

I was going to say licithin too! Also try not to sleep in a position that would put any pressure on your breasts. There are physical therapists that are trained I do ultrasound therapy for recurrent plugged duct issues so look to see if there is one in your area.
