We're going out of town for the weekend and my SIL is watching DS2. She asked if I was going to leave our insurance card and a medical consent form in case of an emergency. I guess a family she used to babysit for would leave one when she babysat overnight. I honestly hadn't even thought of it/didn't realize that was a thing. I can definitely do it, I was just wondering if other people did this or if it was necessary? I assume in an emergency my child would be treated regardless of a form?

We always leave one with the grandparents who have taken care of our kids when we have travelled (internationally) without them. I figure it covers any questions that might get asked in terms of decision-making, but also wonder if it is more to calm my nerves about leaving than anything else!

We do this when we leave our kids with grandparents for the weekend. It gives them the ability to make medical decisions and includes info about doctors, allergies, etc.

We did it for the grandparents who babysit 40 hours a week.

We also do it for the grandparents. We've never had a sitter ask for one but our sitter experience is limited. We have insurance and medical record numbers posted for sitters.

We did it originally when leaving DD with my mom for a weekend. Once we were local to my mom we made one for her to have in general since she is often with DD without us present. My mom has a copy of DD's insurance card saved on her phone, along with her doctor's info, so she can access it if needed.
I would leave one with anyone watching DD overnight.
In an emergency of course your child would be treated - but it may or may not be the treatment you would want. And it's more likely for kids to need minor treatment or medication - which could be denied.

Yes, we do it when we leave our kids with DH’s parents when we travel. They’re a surgeon and nurse, and told us it was a must the first time we did it.

I would expect my child to be treated in an emergency regardless of a form, but the more likely scenario is my parents are watching my kids and need to take one of them to urgent care for strep or an ear infection and I don't want the possibility of care being denied because I didn’t fill out paperwork in advance.

We are leaving the kids with grandparents next month but I hadn’t thought about this. It is a good idea but I want to make sure it is actually useful if we do it. Thanks!

I have done this, but I have also not done this. I think it is unnecessary in reality. If it is a life threatening emergency, no hospital is going to check ID and ask about guardianship and parentage.... and cell phones work almost everywhere these days. If I was going somewhere remote where I couldn't be reached, I would leave one but otherwise... it's just extra precaution.

I just leave the insurance card and my flex spending card. I figure my mom would call me and I would be able to speak to whomever is treating my kids or relay what I want done/not done through my mom. My kids have gotten sick when they stay with her, but nothing that warrants a visit to the doctor.
