Tomorrow is "meet the teacher" night at the daycare my LO will start going to on Monday (eek!) and while I'm excited to ask his childcare giver questions and get a feel for them, my MIL wants to tag along.
Why am I so selfish and greedy that I want it to be just me and hubs there?? I feel bad that I don't want her to come! Is that wrong?

Why on earth would your MIL think this is something she should be included in? That seems really strange to me. I would lie and say the day care only allows parents to attend.

Wow, I can't imagine bringing my MIL to that. I usually don't even see two parents at those things ... much less two parents plus a MIL!

@MamaMoose: @Andrea: Thank you! I thought I was overreacting! My husband isn't sure how to tell her no and I'm for SURE not going to say anything. It's such an awkward position I'm in. There's no reason she shouldn't be able to go... but it's just weird to me.

Your MIL has no need to be there. It is your decision on daycare so I would just tell her that you don't need to be there.

@brownie: She told hubs she was just curious because she's heard good things and wants to see the place and wants to go for her own "peace of mind" of where MY baby is going. I know I sound possessive but... I can't help it!

I would be the same way... oh wait, I am! Is there a way to go with her at another time? Tell her that you don't want to "bore" her so you'll take her around another day and show her the interesting parts?

@obxwife: My MIL asked my DH to take her (I was at work) and show her around because she was uneasy about strangers watching her granddaughter! She was always making comments like...just because the daycare is at a church doesn't make it trustworthy and just because a daycare is licensed doesn't mean the teachers are good with infants, etc.
He didn't want to take her but MIL is now familiar with the pick up and drop off routine and no longer makes comments. Maybe you can take her another time! Good luck!

I think it helped my mom to physically see where she was all day. She loved it and said it reminded her of the daycare they sent me to as a baby. However, I agree, besides the parents, no one else should be at a teacher conference.

I like the lying idea. Just tell her only parents are allowed, and maybe offer to show her around another time. She needs to trust that you're making good decisions for your lo.

@obxwife: seriously, what @chopsuey119 said. Your MIL needs to chill. This is not her child, it is yours. Yes, great idea already suggested - YOU go on meet the teacher night. Take her when it's not a special occasion. Daycares are normally (and should be) open door so you can come in at any time. She doesn't need to be there for that special occasion.

@mediagirl: Thanks! I wish my husband would gently tell her it should just be us two. I'm also strangely nervous that if she comes, I won't be comfortable enough to ask the questions I want to.

@obxwife: oh yeah, that is huge - asking questions. You don't want someone there with you that might make you feel uncomfortable. I know that if my Mom or MIL were with us on a meet the teacher event, I would feel intimidated or just uncomfortable being myself and asking what I want to ask....

@mediagirl: Yes! Intimidated is the perfect word! I also don't want HER to start asking questions. Her input can be addressed a different time, IF (big IF) she ends up coming, I almost want to send her off on her own tour while we address his teachers.

@obxwife - you know my thoughts. It isn't her place and you are NOT being mean not wanting her there. This is your baby, your baby's child care, and YOUR opinion is what matters.

There is no reason she should go and I can only see her being there causing problems for you and DH. What if she doesn't like it, is she going to give you a hard time about sending LO there?
Could she watch your LO while you and you DH go or are you planning to take your LO with you?

@purrpletulips: We took him with and she didn't end up coming because she said it would make her sad since she wasn't watching my LO daily anymore! LOL. It all went well and I'm very impressed with the daycare, excited for him to start on Tuesday!
