Just read an article saying Melissa McCarthy's cover is fast shaming because she is wearing a coat, showing very little skin and her hair partially covers her face. The article brought up (skinnier) Reese Witherspoon coveted Elle in a body concious dress.

I think this is made up controversy. Elle is a fashion mag. The copay is fashion.

I dont think it is "fat-shaming" but I also dont think it looks like Melissa McCarthy. So in that indirect sense, I think they are downplaying her beautfy vs the other two actresses/covers you posted. Not cool either way.

@mrsjyw: I ended up removing Penelipe Cruz cover, I couldnt find a larger pic and now I am not so sure it was a legit cover.
I agree Melissa has looked way prettier and more like herself in other photos.

She could have been posed so that she looked a lot less rumpled and a lot more "movie star" (I think the part of her face that's shown looks stunning!), but I'm not too surprised that this came from ELLE--it is a pretty mediocre magazine all around. I'd be really peeved if I was the designer of that coat, though. It looks like it could be quite attractive, but the stylist didn't even bother to smooth out the collar. I feel like they must be going to tell readers that "the perfect new coat shape" is "wrinkled".

I certainly don't think they did Melissa McCarthy any favors with this cover ... I kind of feel like they are saying the only way they can glam up a plus sized lady is to cover her in way too much material. This is a pretty common theme in fashion though, cover plus sized ladies up or only show their face, when they could actually style them and show the beauty that is their curves.

While I agree that they could've dressed her in something that played up her curves, any time I've seen her on the red carpet, she has been in long sleeved dresses made with a lot of fabric. Perhaps this wasn't just Elle trying to cover her body shape but also her comfort level with fashion. I think she's gorgeous and should find a designer who will work with her figure, but it seems that she isn't comfortable with those styles.
