I know I don't want a bumper because of AAP's safety recommendations, but what about a mesh breathable bumper?
I couldn't find anything online that mentioned what the AAP says about these. Do you know what the recommendations are?

I'm planning on getting a breathable bumper. They should be safe enough, since baby can get air through the bumper even if she decides to smoosh her head right up against it.

@skibobrown: is your daughter still in a bassinet then?

Yeah, she's in the Pack N Play for now. We'll transition her to a crib when we move -- she'll be 4 months old. I probably won't worry about a crib bumper until she starts rolling in the night.

@skibobrown: eek I just read that most babies are rolling by 4 months. My son is just over 3 months! I'm getting nervous

My LO is 3 1/2 months right now and he just started to move around in his crib when he sleeps. One time I found him 90 degrees with his head up against the crib and then another time he had turned 180 degrees! I was in shock! I've been thinking about getting a breathable bumper...

@enjollah: is he swaddled? I'm hoping that with my son being swaddled he won't be moving around as much.

No, not anymore...just a long sleeve onesie and a sleep sack. He actually sleeps on his tummy now

Aap actually banned mesh bumpers too. I used one for Charlie and am using one for olive. She gets her legs stuck between the slats. Why they don't design cribs so you don't need bumpers in the first place is beyond me!

We have a breathable bumper. DD hasn't moved around in her crib yet though, but I do like it.

@Mrs. Bee: I was thinking the same thing!! Not sure how they'd do it though. You wouldn't want to place your baby into a box, I guess just the slats would have to be even closer together.
although some people say the bumpers are to protect their kids heads, I guess some babies get rowdy in their sleep!

@Mrs. Bee: I think the same thing. Maybe with your baby connections you can tell someone to design a crib like that!
We also used a breathable one or else DD would wake up when her legs got stuck.

My nephew used the mesh ones-- he would get his foot caught and hit his head on the sides otherwise. But, another option is the individual ones-- google tells me they are called Wonder Bumbers-- the wrap around each slat. http://www.gomamagodesigns.com/wonder-bumpers
Seem like a pain to put on, and they might not fix the tiny limbs getting caught in the slats, but they would fix the head hitting.

I was going to echo Mrs. Bee. AAP says no bumpers at all.

@Foodnerd81: what a neat and cool looking idea! Though very expensive.

We use a breathable bumper. I don't know how I feel about it now. She just pulls it down and then gets her limbs stuck in the crib anyway.

I have a "regular" bumper in there now for looks - but I'll probably use the breathable one I registered for when I start putting her in there, when she can move around. I plan to use the crib from an early, early age ...but as soon as she can wiggle I want to switch out the thick bumper for the breathable. once she's older I'll put the thick one back in.

@Coco Bee: I didn't even look at the price (since I'm not actually buying it) but I bet some crafty etsy-ers have figured out how to make it at home cheaper!

@Mrs. Jacks: Do you know why the AAP doesn't recommend breathable bumpers? It seems like the breathable ones shouldn't pose a SIDS risk, but maybe there's something I'm not considering...
blogger / pineapple / 12381 posts
@skibobrown: I think there is greater risk of entanglement and there have been some associated deaths. Here's a summary statement:
"Researchers found reports from medical examiners and coroners of 27 accidental deaths of children ages 1 month to 2 years, that were attributed to suffocation when they became wedged against a padded bumper or strangulation by a bumper tie around the neck. Eleven of the infants who died most likely suffocated when their face rested against the bumper pad, 13 infants died when they became wedged between the bumper pad and another object, like the crib mattress, and three infants died when they were strangled by a bumper tie. "

@Mrs. Jacks: the mesh bumpers don't have ties though, they slide through the slats instead.
blogger / pomelo / 5400 posts
@Coco Bee: There are ties on the outside, though I honestly don't know how any baby would be at risk. They're quite short.
admin / watermelon / 14210 posts
Mine has Velcro - no ties. I don't worry about it or I would have taken it off.
blogger / pineapple / 12381 posts
@Coco Bee: I don't know. We never got one. I just pulled the article to figure out why and it said that there have been no fatal injuries from crib slats, but there have been from all sorts of bumpers.

@Mrs. Jacks: (and everyone else): so my LO has been scooting/squirming around in his crib and bumps his head against the crib rails. I just realized tonight! I heard the thump from our room (our rooms are next to each other). Any suggestions?
wonderful pear / 26210 posts
My breathable bumper had velcro, but I didn't end up using it, partly because I couldn't figure out how to wrap it correctly around our crib (Ikea, can't recall the model name) and because it didn't help with the head banging issue once we stopped the swaddle. So, I made the decision to use the padded bumper and haven't looked back since.
blogger / pineapple / 12381 posts
@enjollah: All the research I did to post on this thread said that babies who hit their heads on the crib rails don't end up with significant injuries, so it's just better to let them bonk than put anything in the crib.
As long as you are weighing the risks and benefits and feel comfortable with your decision, that's all anyone can ask.
kiwi / 623 posts
@Mrs. Jacks: hmmm okay. Thanks for your input. It just makes me feel so uneasy because the bonks sound harder than bonks. Im still on the fence but it's nice to read people's input from past posts.
