Hi bees!
I've had a migraine since sunday and I need some advice on what to do. I've had a handful of migraines in my life but nothing like this. I'm at a loss as to what to do. I've taken my imitrex but that didn't help. I had to call off work today because I just can't function. I'm tempted to go to urgent care but don't know what they'll be able to do.
What do you do when you have a migraine?

Oh I'm so sorry, those are hell.
No real advice....I find Exedrin Migraine, slowly hydrating myself as much as possible (too fast and I throw up) and lying down in a cold room with a cold washcloth over my eyes and sleeping usually kicks it (and feel very lucky that the Exedrin works).
I hope you can kick it soon

I usually have to sleep it off. There are a ton of remedies you can try though.
Drink Caffeine
Drink a glass of red wine
Suck on ice (cold on the mouth)
Exercise

@Thehistoryofus: exercise makes it worse. Actually, moving makes it worse. Sleep hasn't helped either. And I chugged a pop and that hasn't helped.

Oh girl I'm sorry! I feel your pain. I have hormone related migraines and they SUCK! My go to plan is always:
Dark - this is key for me
No sounds
Caffeine - usually pop for me
And tylenol pm.
I've never found anything that works for me over the counter so the only thing that helps is just knocking myself out and sleeping through most of it. I'm sorry - hopefully you feel better SOON!

@Mrs.VW: I'm beginning to think that's what mine is. My hormones have been way out of whack since our miscarriage so I almost wonder if they're linked. I went to the chiropractor yesterday and he adjusted me but didn't give me any advice. Thanks for the tips! :))

I'm another one who has to sleep it off to have the migraine fully go away. Some other things that help include drinking some caffeine (pepsi always works best) and laying down in a dark room.

i am a chronic migraine sufferer and have had to rely on ex st tylenol since pregnancy... nothing has helped more than ice packing my head in a dark room and lying down... and keeping well hydrated with water

@Ash: bag of ice under the neck seems to help me. But if you've had one for this long maybe you should call your dr.

@Ash: I'm sorry! Not a reminder you want to have I also agree with the ice - sometimes TOO cold is too much for me, but a cold washcloth helps a ton!

I agree with the ice pack on the back of your neck-- get the soft kind, like that you could wrap around a knee or something, it feels the best on your neck. You can also move it to your forehead. If it's at all sinus related (mine usually are) a wet hot washcloth over my face helps, though it cools off annoyingly quickly. Advil migraine helped me while Excedrin was off the market for a little while. I used to have a prescription for Relpax but the over the counter stuff helped more. And yeah, laying down in a dark quiet room helps me.
My migraines have a few triggers, but going off the pill they definitely got worse. I had a few of the worst headaches of my life that first month off, then they settled down-- sounds like that is what is happening to you, post m/c. I hope it gets better soon-- they are the worst.

@mrsjyw: @dagret: @Foodnerd81: the ice pack is a God send, oh my gosh. It's a bag of frozen green beans but that's all I have & it works.
@Foodnerd81: I was on bcp about 4 years ago and had to quit cold turkey because of the headaches it gave me. I'm not sure how it all ties together but I think it does. Looks like I need to make an appt to see if I can get things straightened out.
@MrsKoala: I don't drink pop but I've tried and haven't gotten any relief. I'm wondering if there's something more to it.

My husband suffers from migraines. He takes excedrin migraine when they crop up, and it usually works within an hour. During the day he also drinks extra coffee if he gets one.
He gets them often at night, so he's about to try taking just a plain asprin before bed each night to prevent waking up at 2am with one. I'm headed to the store this afternoon to get it.
ETA: Also, when I'm around him during his migraines, I rub his head...usually by his temple, where they usually are, and also the base of his neck. That seems to help a lot.

@Ash: Glad to hear that the ice pack is working at least. If the migraine continues into tomorrow, I would suggest calling your doctor. My MIL has migraines that last a long time and usually needs some kind of medical intervention to end them. So sorry that you are going through this! Migraines are really the worst!

@katiew92081: I have dh bringing some excedrin migraine home... it isn't something I keep in the house since I rarely get them and when I do, the imitrex helps.
p.s. dh usually rubs my neck too but he's at work.
@MrsKoala: I agree with calling my doctor. I'm just not sure which to call... since I don't know the cause. I don't know if I should call my pcp or my midwife (if they're hormonal). Or if I should take a trip to urgent care today. Thank you for your kind words. :))

@Ash: I think if it's been going on 3 days or more and you've tried the imitrex and other remedies, it may be time to get help from urgent care. Be careful with the Excedrin Migraine - I've found that the caffeine can cause rebound headaches (especially if you've been drinking soda already), and it works best at the very beginning of a migraine. At this point you might need something stronger to break up the migraine and possible help with hydration. Hope this ends for you really really soon!

I've heard the same thing as @spaniellove with the Excedrin. It can cause nasty rebound headaches!

When I have a cycle of migraines that just won't go away I have toradol. That's my last chance med before going to the ER. If I have to go to the ER they will give me a cocktail of benadryl, toradol (stronger dose then what I can give myself), and an anti nausea.
If that doesn't work I will go on prednisone temporarily and that will help kick it.
Hormonal migraines are the WORST! I would talk to a neurologist so they can get you some meds that work a little better for you when the imitrex doesn't do it.

@Ash: awesome! If it keeps happening you might want to see a neurologist. If you're TTC you don't want to be on preventatives but they can give you something stronger to keep you from having to go to urgent care.

Acupuncture really helped me and I was just saying to my husband that maybe I need to start going again. My migraines have started up again since having my daughter. My insurance covered the acupuncture since they considered the migraines chronic pain.

@Mrs.VW: Actually I believe Phenegren is what the prescribe for morning sickness!! So safe while TTC and while pregnant. But check with a doctor first to make sure the dosage is safe.
*Note - totally not a medical professional. Just what I've heard.

@threeplusme: I've been going to acupuncture for my headaches/ migraines for a few weeks now. It seems to be working, although more slowly than I would prefer! But if it lasts sort of long term, I will be thrilled. Plus it's so relaxing, which I never thought it would be. It's also safe while TTC and pregnant.

@Foodnerd81: @threeplusme: This was the first time I've ever experienced something like this so I'm hoping it was just a fluke... but if it's a recurring thing, I will definitely look into acupuncture. Plus, it can't hurt to help get my cycle back into whack. :))

next time, try pushing on your pressure points: in the web between your thumb and index finger or have DH or someone else push their thumbs on either side of your spine up into your skull. Another pressure point is just outside your eyes.
