I had a horrible kidney infection about 6 weeks ago and since that event I have had almost daily crippling migraines. Yesterday I started to lose my vision (temporarily) and today the pain was so bad I had to leave work.
I'm breastfeeding and I'm really cautious about what I take. Ibuprofen isn't working. 
how do you cope with the pain?

@matador84: I've had a few since getting pregnant and since I am limited to Tylenol I am taking two extra strength, have a bag of salt and vinegar chips (I swear this actually helps!) and then I use a cold pack on my forehead and lie down in a dark and quiet room.
Sorry it is so miserable, migraines are the worst.

@matador84: I don't know what to suggest that is compatible with breastfeeding, but if you're having the kind that affects your vision I'd highly recommend seeing a neurologist. Especially since a kidney infection triggered the daily migraines. It just seems like something you don't want to DIY in case something is off about your blood levels.
I take Excedrin Tension Headache (acetaminophen and caffeine, no aspirin) which does the trick for me, but I couldn't tell you if that's BF-friendly!
Oh, and Gatorade with some magnesium...

Excedrine always destroyed my stomach and would make me vomit. A cool dark room is the only sure fire cure for me. Out of curiosity, are you on any hormonal BC? That caused a huge problem for me. I hear peppermint essential oil and chiropractor visits or acupuncture can work miracles for more holistic approach.

@spaniellove: I am going to have to see someone...it is hard to function! I'm about to download lactmed med to see what I can take.
@Nskillet: I am going to call my ob tomorrow and see if they think it might be my bc. I am on micronor which is low/no hormone but it's possible.
I'm now running a fever too...ugh. Had DH rub some pep oil on temples and back of neck and it did help some.

@matador84: The only thing that gets rid of them for me is Excedrin, which I think you can take while BF. It's just tylenol, aspirin and caffeine. If you want to avoid OTC meds, a temporary solution that has worked for me is to take a warm shower in the dark while drinking a can of coke. Must be regular coke. Something about the caffeine and sugar, and the hot water on your neck muscles.

Ask your doctor. My neurologist gave me a list of meds to ask my pediatrician about, and I talked to a lactation consultant. Lots of meds are ok, and some you can take right after nursing and then they are out of your system by the time you have to nurse again. If I have to take the med before lo eats I just give her a bottle. I don't love doing that but i have to feel ok to take care of her.

@matador84: Call your your GP tomorrow and tell them you have a severe headache or migraine and a fever and need to be seen soon. They should take you seriously! Hope you're feeling better soon!

Ugh, they are terrible. No advice on the meds but an ice pack at the base of my skull/back of my neck and some caffeine usually helps me a little.

@spaniellove: I'm hoping I can get in tomorrow. I don't have a gp which is killing me and I had been going to an urgent care clinic for the kidney infection.

Ugh I'm so sorry. If I don't catch mine right at the beginning with Ibuprofin and caffeine, I have to get RX drugs. What a previous poster said is true: many drugs are in fact BF safe, so definitely check with an LC. Did you get Percocet for postpartum pain management? You might try that if you have some left? Definitely talk to a dr. though- the temporary vision loss is worrisome. Hope you feel much better very soon.

I take meds for my migraines but I don't think its safe when BF. Also my Dr told me that if I get more than 9 a month then I need to be seen by a neurologist because something else could be going on.

@matador84: How are you feeling this morning? Were you able to call? Or can you have DH call for you? I'm worried about you! This may sound extreme, but urgent care will see you for migraines. It's not "just a headache".

Agreed, you should go to urgent care if you need it. They can give you IV fluids and a cocktail of meds. You might have to pump and dump for awhile, but you have to take care of yourself before you can take care of lo.

@erinpye: no I didn't take any meds after having the kids, but I'm having a hard time managing the pain so I'm becoming not opposed to it!
@Mamaof2: yeah that is not good...I'm having them daily!
@spaniellove: I woke up and felt "ok." But, I can def feel one starting to come on so I am sitting in my office and took some ibuprofen. I think I need to run to nurses office and get my temp taken because I think I'm getting a fever again.
@heffalump: I'm calling around to gps now seeing if I can get in anywhere. I might have to run to urgent care.

Update-went to urgent care. They found a large amount of blood in my urine. They also (2 doctors came to listen) heard crackling in my chest (wth!) and did a chest xray. They said it looks okay.
Can't figure out why/how migraines are related to fever and test results. I have an appt with a GP on Monday. They wanted me to follow up here in a week but I don't want to wait that long.

@matador84: Oh wow. I'm so glad you went to urgent care...that sounds scary! Is it possible that you're having severe headaches with associated symptoms that aren't migraines? A week sounds like an awfully long time with what's going on and I would maybe try to keep calling that new GP to see if they can get you in any sooner or if there's anyone else on staff who can see you for triage. Did they talk to you about what symptoms would warrant an ER visit?

I am surprised they aren't getting you in until Monday - Can you ask to be called if someone cancels so you can be seen earlier?

@Mamaof2: I called pretty much every gp in town that is accepting new patients. That was the earliest I could get! It's been awful.
@spaniellove: I am so glad i went too even though I don't really have an answer. The symptoms are so isolated he was having a hard time figuring out what is going on.

@matador84: Don't know what your ER copay is, but if you go through the ER, I think they can get the on call neuro to see you there. That's what happened to me - they wanted to rule out meningitis and a couple of neuros saw me, did testing, treated the migraine, and put together a plan to start following me.
