My grandfather in law was talking about a millionaire's family and I had to ask him what that meant! I'll put the answer in the comments after a few minutes.
What does that mean to you? Have you ever heard that saying "a millionaire's family?"

A family with one boy and one girl right? Someone commented to me about it when we announced LO2 was a girl.

@pastemoo: that was my guess! I think there's a similar expression in French, "King's family" meaning 2 kids, first boy, then girl. Like the family of the future king of England

@MoonMoon: Oh, does the boy have to be first for it to be a millionaire's family? (in laws are Canadian, maybe it's definitely related to the French saying?)

@pastemoo: I'm not sure! That's just how the French expression was explained to me.

@pastemoo: I've heard a similar term: King's choice! First the king has a son (the heir) and then he has a daughter (to marry off to another king and ensure peace between two kingdoms).
These days it's mostly used to refer to a boy and a girl in any order...

I've never heard the expression millionaire's family, but have heard of that same thing being called the "million dollar family". I always assumed it meant you "won" against the odds like winning a million dollars, but the kings family explanation makes sense.

My mother in law says that's what they had- that's the only time I've ever heard it!

I hadn't heard of it until we found out we were having a girl (we have a son already). A lot of my moms friends made that comment. Must be a generational thing! Lol

I'd never heard of it until we found out Baby #2 was a girl. I had several people comment, "oh, the million dollar family!"

Yep! We got tons of "million dollar family" commentary when DD was born! Lots of people assuming that with a boy then a girl we had it "perfect" and should be done.

Never heard of this phrase but I guess that's what we'll be in a few days time!

@pastemoo: I work with an elderly population, and I have had SO many people comment on my 'millionaires family' when I say I have one of each. It's bizarre cause that's never something I heard of until I got pregnant with a boy!

@pastemoo: I agree. She gets so mad when I tell her that I'm having more. When I say I will have more she responds with, "in 10 years maybe".
I personally want to be done having kids before I turn 30. I'm mid 20s right now so yeah.

So... it doesn't have anything to do with having a lot of money...?

found this:
The expression refers to a family with a first born son and a younger sister . The reason is because the son would inherit the estate undivided and the younger sister could be married off for wealth or allegiances. .

@Mamaof2: Wow, never heard of it before. My family is a "millionaire's family" since my brother is firstborn and me second.
