I know layout (and region) accounts for a lot but what's the minimum square footage fo your "forever" (not dream) house?
We saw a house we love that's a little over 1,500 but we would prefer 1,700. I don't really want muh bigger.

1000 sf I could do, especially with a big yard. I don't prefer large homes.

Our house is 1400 sqft and it is our forever hope! We most likely will end at 2 LOs, so while it's not a ton of space, I think it's going to be just right. I grew up in an apartment and never felt like I didn't have enough space, so I always opt for a smaller house since it's less to clean, and less space I need stuff to fill it with! Our lot is 7000 sqft tho so we have a nice size yard!

Our house (which is our forever home) is just under 2000 and that's plenty! I can't imagine going bigger without hiring someone to clean. I think our house is the perfect size now.
nectarine / 2690 posts
Our house is 1550 sf. I would love for it to be closer to 2000 (a larger kitchen and another bedroom - maybe another bath or 1/2 bath) but, I'm not unhappy with the size of our home, and we don't have any plans to move.

I think my ideal forever home would be 2000-2200 but could probably live with 1800 if it had the right layout (and hopefully 4 bedrooms).

2400. (We are completely in love with our current 1400 sq ft home, and home prices are so high right now, we've decided 2400 is the minimum we'd be willing to move for.)
grapefruit / 4649 posts
We have 2400 plus an unfinished basement. We could happily go a bit smaller but not fewer rooms. We have 3 beds, 2.5 baths. We have room to grow or add an addition if we wanted.

our home is 1200 sqft - I think 1500 would be perfect, an extra bathroom, an extra family room and slightly bigger bedrooms
We either plan to a) make this our forever home and do a small addition.... or b) build on the other side of our property. If we do build our home will be as small as necessary (so like 1500-1600 sqft)

I think 2000, though I've never lived in that much space so who knows. Dh recently said 3000 and I said we definitely would need a cleaning lady at that point! (He likes to dream big).

Ideally 1800 is the probably the biggest I would go, with a full basement. However i would do 2200 if there were 4 bedrooms upstairs.

We have a 1950 sq. foot home, but that includes a 3-car garage and its single story. So it ends up being 2 baths, 3 bedrooms, and a den. While its just fine for us and our soon to be 2 kids, there isn't any room for guests and I'd like a dedicated rumpus room for the kids, so I think we're looking at either an ENORMOUS 3200+ sq. foot single-story home with at least 4 bedrooms, an office, and a playroom (my husband's preference) or a 2-story home with at least 5 bedrooms and a loft (which I assume would be in the 2700-3000 sq. foot range) We entertain, so having a dedicated dining room and formal living room is a must.

Layout is so much more important to me than size.
We're in 1,200sf with a partially finished basement and won't need more sf for a few more years.
wonderful pea / 17279 posts
Layout plays such a big factor plus there are some "bonus" rooms that I'd love to have in a forever "dream" home. 3,000 Sq ft should do it.
persimmon / 1188 posts
We have 3000 and it's too much. I'd prefer a smaller home with a better layout. We looked for a year and it was the best we could do. I think the layout makes such a difference. Our den where we spend so much time, keep LOs toys is too small then there are rooms I don't see for a week. We do expect our family to grow and fill up the house some more. We plan to finish the basement for the kids' toys.
cantaloupe / 6059 posts
Our home is 2,100 square feet and if we had an additional family room space and an office it would be perfect so I say 2,500-2,750 or thereabouts.
persimmon / 1322 posts
Minimum? Probably around 1400. Our current house is 1008 and we're already outgrowing it. We don't need a ton more space though, as long as it has a decent lay out.

2300. We are currently in a 2600sf house. We have a lot of space to move and don't really need that much space. We could do with 2000 but I'd prefer 2300. We don't have basements down here so I can't count that. And I KNOW this seems big to a lot of people. I love space...

Minimum would be 1500 for a great house/yard combo (if we didn't have kids I'd go as low as 1200 happily), but realistic minimum is more like 1700.
cantaloupe / 6131 posts
Oh yeah, we live on the West Coast, so there aren't really basements out here. DH's family lives in the Midwest and everyone has a basement and its so great because all the kid's stuff and mess can live down there!
grapefruit / 4545 posts
We have 3,000 now (plus about 800 sq ft finished basement) and its great - but definitely more than we need. We could certainly give up our living room (we have a family room and a living room...having the basement finished we could do with one living space on the main floor).
Our old home was 2,000 sq ft - it was a great size. If we could have put one more modest size bedroom (11x11 or so) it would have been great. Plus we would have finished the basement...so I suppose 2,150 plus a finished space in the basement is my ideal.

We are in the process of buying a house that's about 2500. Seems really big to me after years of living in tiny city apartments and currently a smaller home (1400sf), but we have two children and a dog and are planning on another child and another pet. So I think we will grow into it nicely!
honeydew / 7622 posts
Our house is not our forever home but it's 3000 sq ft. We could have less space depending on the layout and efficiency of storage.
pomegranate / 3580 posts
We're looking to buy this summer and are hoping for 1700 sq. ft. minimum (for a family of four). We live in a 1000 right now and it's definitely way too small, but I haven't lived in bigger as an adult, so I'm not sure what will be too big!
grapefruit / 4187 posts
Mine is just under 2000 and I think that's perfect!! Not included is the attic, garage and unfinished section of the basement so there is a ton of storage in addition to the "living" square footage.

We just built our first home, and went from a 1100sq. Ft. Two bedroom apt. To a 2300 sq. ft. Three bedroom house. Utilities haven't been crazy at all they're building new homes very tight, and energy efficient! This could easily be our forever home if it had a finished basement! That being said, our forever home will probably be right at 3000 sq. ft, in 4-6yrs from now.

Ours right now is around 1400 and I would like a little more space. I think 1800-2000 would be plenty.
cantaloupe / 6669 posts
2200 sq ft sounds about right. I like our current house a lot but I just wish all the rooms were a little bigger.
persimmon / 1367 posts
We are in our forever home, it is about 1800sf plus a full basement for storage/laundry/man room. I'm really happy with the size, but the layout could be better. When LO is out of daycare we're planning to do a little remodeling to get an actual dining room on the first floor.
pear / 1930 posts
I live in my forever home now, it is 2200 sq ft and is way too big. I wish my bedroom was half the size it is (so like lose 150 there) and that there wasn't a formal living room (150 there). I would also kind of like to lose the eat in part of the kitchen (70 sq ft there). I guess then 1830 sq ft if I did my math correctly.
pear / 1809 posts
Between 2,600 and 3,000 square feet. I want to have a bedroom for each child and a bonus room. Plus a large enough living area to entertain.
pomelo / 5678 posts
I really dislike basements unless they are walkout and completely finished (Random thoughts here.) I've had some bad experiences!
pear / 1586 posts
Our house is 2300 sqft and it's a good size for us. We have an attic that we will likely finish if we decide to stay here long-term - that would become a playroom/den plus a guest room. (It's nice for us to have a guest room bc half of our immediate families live an 8-hr drive away, and we are planning on 2-3 kids.)
persimmon / 1233 posts
Ours is 2200 and I wouldn't want any bigger. I was all about small spaces having lived in 250 and 900 sq ft for our past two apartments, but I have to say it's nice to have a dedicated guest room, large kitchen and more than one bathroom!
grapefruit / 4089 posts
We have somewhere around 1200 now, plus finished basement. I would like more space in our "forever home", but definitely not more than 2000 sq ft. I'd say 1600ish plus finished basement would be ideal.
pomelo / 5258 posts
We have 1400 sf ft (no basement). It's perfect for our family of four. I think it helps that our neighborhood is all 1100 sq ft homes so we feel like we have a lot of space in comparison.
nectarine / 2243 posts
For me it's less about square feet but more about layout. In the past 10 years I lived in a 2200 sq foot town home with three levels and 4 beds and 3.5 baths in a different city, a 1500 sq ft 2 bed apt which was a 5th floor walk up, and a 1400 sq ft three bed apt(current). Oddly I like our current place the most because the layout is great and we have a third bedroom and it's on one level. The only thing I would change is a slightly larger living room. I think I would want a big house if I lived in a suburb and couldn't walk out my door to a ton of stuff ((I'd probably be home more?)
