Just wondering if any of you have used mirena and what your overall satisfaction was.
How did it affect your milk supply? Your libido? Any side affects you hated? How were the menstrual cramps?
Thanks in advance!

I had Mirena after my first DD was born. Can't comment on milk supply effect because she wasn't bf'ing at the time I got it. No noticeable side effects for me other than much lighter periods after a while. It was more like just spotting than a period! and I loved not having to take a pill every day! It was great for me!

Great question! Mirena is one of the BC options I'm considering after LO is born. I've done Depo and daily BCP, but I'm looking for something low maintenance (until our family is complete and DH gets "fixed").

I’ll go back on Mirena after LO arrives, so I don’t have post-baby experience with it yet. My OB said Mirena is a great choice after birth because it doesn’t contain estrogen, which is what can mess with the milk supply.
When I had it before, I had bleeding at first for a while (a few weeks, on and off, like a period), and then for the years after that NO periods at all (not even spotting!). It was fantastic! Also never had any cramps while on Mirena, except for about 6-8 weeks after I got it inserted (on and off).
I think it’s a great option because there is nothing to remember or do – it takes about 30 seconds to insert at your doctor's office (my OB recommends doing it at the 6 week post-partum visit for convenience), and that’s it.

Thanks! I definitely want something low maintenance. I have only ever done the pill but with a baby and work and errands I don't think that's logical. Haha.
I love the idea of no cramps....mine are always so bad off BC that I usually can't function.

I had Mirena for four years and loved it. I spotted the first month after insertion and than said good bye to cramps and bleeding. It was wonderful. The only thing I didn't like (besides the painful insertion) was having to wait for an appointment to take it out when we were ready to TTC.

I had it for a year and a half and loved it while it was in.
I'm not super happy with how it has been after removing it but while having it it was great!

@Crisark: what aren't you happy with I'd you don't mind my asking? I will need to have it out when we try for number 2 in a year it two.

@His Barista: I don't mind you asking at all.
I had mine removed on Feb 15th., I started what I thought was my first period after on Feb 18th. It was normal but intense since I hadn't had one in so long. I then didn't have anything but one day of bleeding two weeks later on March 6th.
My hormones were all over the place and I was kinda miserable.
I just yesterday got AF again and what I feel is probably my first REAL one since having it removed.
We are also trying for number 3 and it's been an emotional roller coaster. I am finally feeling better and it's close to two months after having it out.
It's a process that your body has to go through. I was given unrealistic expectations by my doctor so then I became really upset when things just didn't seem to be happening as easily.
If you go in knowing there will be some time of adjustment after having it removed you should be fine.

@His Barista: No problem! Any questions you have when that time comes I'll be glad to help since I will have just gone through it all lol

I just got Mirena 3 weeks ago...so I go in for my checkup in a week. The first day I was pretty uncomfortable with the cramping (I usually do not have cramps with my period) but it was gone by the next day. I have had spotting for the past three weeks so I'm hoping that will end soon. It hasn't affected my milk supply which was something I really worried about. It really gives me peace of mind bc I do not want to try for baby #2 for at least 2 years (LO is almost 5 months)
