I am thinking about getting mine taken out. I am super moody, can't lose weight (gained 10-15lbs when I got it), and have zero sex drive. DH said whatever I want to do is fine, but isn't excited about using condoms for the next 6 months.

Honestly, I can't link anything specific to having the Mirena.
I've always been heavy and have always had to watch my weight. The Mirena hasn't changed that, my sex drive isn't any worse and I take anxiety meds to help with my normal moody 'crazy' stuff.
So, for me, there aren't any side effects or negative issues.

For me it's hard to tell what are side effects from the mirena vs normal crazy hormones while breastfeeding, but I have definitely noticed a decreased sex drive.

No side effects that I have noticed. I've had it in for about a year.

The only side-effect I had was no period for four years. It was a good side effect.

No side effects except i had intermittent spotting. I think that's worse than periods! I didn't notice a difference in my sex drive. If anything, it probably went up.

My only side effect after the first few months was no period or light spotting when I should have had my period. There was a small adjustment period after I had it removed but things went back to normal pretty quickly.

So far, I can't tell of any. I've actually been slowly(very slowly) losing weight the last month or slow without being on a diet/exercising.

I did okay on the Mirena for 18 months and then suddenly was terribly moody, nauseated, and just felt awful--almost like I was pregnant. Got it removed 3 months ago and started feeling much better about two days after getting it removed.

@Smurfette: I gained 15 lbs and I had random weird cramps. I just got mine out Friday. I'll let you know if it helps anything!

I had Mirena for 6 years before and I got it again 8 weeks pp. I am moody, carrying a little more chub (I weigh the same as pre-baby), and have zero sex drive but I didn't have any of those with Mirena pre-baby. I attribute those things to BFing and lack of sleep.

@Smurfette: I took mine out because I immediately started noticing that I was retaining weight in my midsection. I also bled nonstop from the day I put it in… so I was bleeding for 5 months straight. I instantly felt better 2-3 days after taking it out.
What made me make the final decision was when I was telling some pharmacist friends of mine about the mirena, and they were all, "oh yea - progesterone only drugs are known to make you gain weight. Over time most people will gain about 20 lbs" - yikes! I wasn't going to wait for that day to come.

@yellowbird: I have weird cramps too. Let me know how it works for you.
@Mrs. High Heels: 5 months that is nuts! 20lbs is depressing! I feel like I am almost there.
I am jealous of everyone who doesn't get a period. While I don't have 7 days of flow I still have 7 days of off and on spotting and light flow.

@Smurfette: yea, and 2 days after i took it out… no more bleeding! sucks because I was EBF so i shouldn't have been getting any kind of blood in the first place. right now i still haven't seen any signs of AF. i want my 5 months back!! lol

I had it for just over a year. I was the unlucky one that it partially implanted in my uterus wall. I was having insane cramps, and when they sent me for an US they discovered I also had a 4cm hymeratic (SP?? blood filled) cyst on my right ovary. I gained about 10 pounds instantly, and after spotting for a few weeks did not get my period.
I chose to have it removed at an OB-GYN, which hurt more then getting it in!! I passed out and threw up. I had never been pregnant which they warned me these things could happen because of it. If I chose to do an IUD again I would go non hormonal.

@MrsScottish: yours implanted, mine went all the way through, lol.
Embedded in abdominal wall, then surgically removed probably doesn't count as "side effect"? The other things I experienced while on it I will never know if they were because of it as-is, or because of it and where it was, lol.

@Beebug: I remember your story! It still freaks me out.

@Smurfette: Thankfully in the minority, it does work great for most and those experiences I heard from friends, and even my baby doc are why I chose it in the first place....just got the short end of the stick with it

I had it for 2 years and the only side effect I had was a lighter period... it got lighter the longer I was on it too. That's it!

Ugh... I hated my Mirena.
I had acne, mood swings, cramps, and bleeding. I also had TERRIBLE back pain. Like back labor back pain. It turns out I was having back labor because my body was trying to birth the stupid thing. After 2 months I finally got it checked, and it was falling out my uterus. They had to take it out immediately.
Oh, and ovarian cysts.

Depression, mood swings, severe daily headaches, no weight loss. It was terrible. I had it removed after about 6 weeks and everything stopped.

Interesting. I've had mine for 2 years now and I don't have any major issues, but I never know if I'm pmsing or not because I just get the most random spotting.
And now that it's been mentioned, maybe this impossible to lose baby weight can be blamed on that. And the low sex drive. I thought that was just a side effect of having a kid!

I had mine pre-pregnancy for about a year. I had horrible mood swings and had about 6 urine infections during that time. Had it taken out and was back to normal.

I felt like I had a light period every few weeks - it was awful! I hate the constant spotting. I was so happy when I got it taken out.

I never had any side effects with mirena. I loved it, but I did continue to have my usual periods (bummer).

Oh, I forgot to mention something amazing -- for me no periods meant no menstrual migraines. Before I got the Mirena I was getting migraines on the first or second day of my period about 3/4 of the time. I was miserable and missed a bunch of work. Mirena fixed it.
