Mixed babies

@Babylove I hope that the doctor had good intentions. Many ethnicities have a higher risk for certain diseases and need to be screened early. Perhaps that is why they asked? Either way, that is something that I would explain before I asked. Having a mixed race baby will probably make me a more sensitive doctor in that regard if I ever go back to work.

Oh darn it, @mrbee already answered haha

I read something a long while ago that said among the identified racial groups at the time there were no genetic differences that could be found, meaning that if you had a blind sample from each group, you couldn't tell which one was from a caucasian vs. asian, etc. Not sure if the information still holds, I don't really have time to search around this morning.

I also think that there's a big blur nowadays between race and ethnicity. People use the terms interchangeably in some instances and it's not always correct. People say they are mixed when they have parents that come from two countries in Western Europe, and it is correct that they are ethnically mixed, but may not be racially mixed. I hope that makes sense...it is a pet peeve of mine when people are asked their race and answer their nationality or ethnicity.

Even though I'm mixed, it doesn't show (as in not physically) I'm half italian half french. I think it may be harder for say dark skinned or asians but I think now alot of people are mixed so when it comes time for your kids to go to school, he/she won't be alone.

my husband is 1/4 choctaw, 1/4 white {not sure what that background is}, 1/4 quechua, 1/4 peruvian & I'm white, basically. I'm not too worried about the baby facing any sort of racism or being called names or anything like that. everyone thinks that nico is mexican & we have such a high percentage of hispanic people in the dfw area I don't think that our having another little brown baby will ruffle anyone's feathers. plus, I see more & more inter-racial couples here & I love that since it helps so much to open people's minds up beyond the homogeneous mentality.

@looch: I hate when people mix up those terms, too! For some reason, it must be fun to "Guess the Asian" because at my old job (in hotel hospitality), people would ALWAYS try to figure out "where I was from." Except they would ask, "What's your nationality?" to which I would respond, "American."

You're right Mr. Bee and EcoGirl. There are many physiological differences among some races. But in this instance, her question was based in curiousity. I know this because she followed up the question with, "is your husband the same complexion?". And that's where the conversation ended.

@BabyLove: Sounds like she needs some training on how to build trust with her patients!
