Just picked up my 4.5 year old at pre-k. Today they were doing a "let's hold hands in friendship" lesson on MLK day. She came home with a cute little art project with paper dolls she decorated in different skin tones holding hands.

Then we get in the car, and she says "Kids with brown skin and kids with white skin can't drink from the same water fountain, right mommy?" GULP....oh dear. It's gonna be an interesting discussion trying to set that straight......

Have you ever had to correct a misunderstood lesson that was well intended, but went over your child's head?

My immediate reaction was to tell her "That was a rule from a long time ago - and it's not the rule anymore. It wasn't very nice, was it?" and to try to discuss our friends (and family members, since we have many SE Asian family members, and technically my kids are mixed race themselves) of different races....she proceeded to identify the blond, pale child as herself, and the dark skinned, black haired child as her favorite cousin - neither of which are accurate, haha, so I suspect she just really doesn't "get" race at this point - which honestly could be a good thing, IMO!
