My LO has it as well but only on her butt so no ones sees it. She also goes to daycare and they haven't said anything so they must be familiar with it. I hope they do go away some day though.

RJ has them all around his ankles, on his butt, and all the way up his back up to his shoulders. Some of them actually look like fingerprints along his sides so they could easily be mistaken for bruises from someone grabbing him too hard...!! And of course, around his ankles...! But everyone at the pediatricians are familiar enough with asian babies that they comment right away that he has a lot of mongolian spots. They've faded since he was born, but they're still very noticeable and all over. I've heard it can take several years for them to go completely away.

LittleG has one on his butt that looks like we pressed our thumb into his lower back and bruised him. He's 2.4 and I hasn't faded a bit. I was alarmed th first time we saw it when haws days old. We just made sure to let his caregivers know it was there.

Interestingly enough, I'm English, German, Polish and Russian...my husband is straight off the Mayflower on both sides of his fam....who knows where the 'Mongolian' came from!

@COASTINGANON we were all born with them too....mom never told me when they faded, but like you we don't have any direct asian roots. Mom is Polish and French Canadian and Dad is Peruvian. But, it wouldn't be surprising since ancestry is generally linked from one continent to the next.

Haha. I always thought the term "Mongolian" was a weird way to describe the discoloration. It really threw me off when I saw it on E's butt when she was a few days old, but thank goodness for Google!

My daughter has them too. She's bi-racial and I worry just the same. My in-laws changed her diaper a couple of weeks ago and expressed concern. I feel the need to warn everyone (family, daycare provider) about them. One of them looks just like a big bruise on her bottom. Her doctor told me most of them fade/disappear by the end of their first year but even if it's longer- I am just glad they're not painful.

My little sister had them, and when she went to pre-school (15 yrs ago), the teachers called my parents because they thought she was being abused! Luckily, my parents had documentation from the pediatrician about the spots!
