We use a Nest indoor camera. We're really happy with it, but it doesn't work on some hotel wifi networks becasue of security. We have a cheaper video monitor for travel.

We got a video camera, not specifically marketed for babies, that we can monitor using our phones (there is no "receiver" unit). There's no sound, but our living areas are compact enough that we don't need it.
I have the camera mounted near the ceiling in LO's room. We do not take a monitor with us when we travel.

We have a Motorola and it does work but I would not recommend. Not sure if it is just ours or what but there is a lot of feedback on the sound. I did not want a wifi monitor, for privacy reasons, so I only researched traditional monitors.
I would recommend getting one with the temperature on it. That was a key factor for me.

If you don't want a video monitor we have the angel care monitor that detects movement/breathing. I love it and it gives me peace of mind. Now that we have 2 kids we couple it with the summer video monitor. So we use the angel care monitor for sound for our youngest and the video monitor on dual screen so we see both kids and the sound is on the older kids room. So I can see and hear both all night if needed.
Might seem extreme to have 2 monitors but I love knowing the angel care is detecting ds's movement/breathing all night.

We have the motorola one that detects temperature, I agree I really like that feature. When it is working, I really like it. When I was pregnant I was like eh, an audio monitor will be fine but now that I have my son (and he is 2!) the video monitor is my #1 thing I can't live without. Our monitor is now 2 years old and the battery life on the monitor is super crappy now (only maybe 20-30 mins before needing to be plugged in), but it's not a big deal, I usually have it parked on the kitchen counter or the coffee table or whatever room I am in. It gives me so much peace of mind. It is so nice even now to see, oh is he waking up? No, just rolling around and making some noise. Oh, he's settling down now. Etc. Seriously could not live without it.
Edit: also about a year ago, the monitor died and we had to get a new one. Motorola did send us one but it took like 2-3 weeks which was a super huge hassle. I had a backup audio monitor for that time.

We've been using our Samsung Video Monitor for going on 4 years, and we still love it! Battery doesn't last as long now as it did in the beginning, but it has great distance and has been dropped many times and is still working great!

I didn't want anything on wifi or viewable on ipad/phone b/c I want to use my ipad/phone for other things. We have the popular Motorola which has worked well! two cameras, 1 monitor for 2 kids.

Thanks everyone! I'm also seeing some good things about the Nest "security" camera.
