I'm pretty sure that if you're moving to an area and want to attend the public school zoned for that area, they have to accept you once you have proof of residence. It's no different than if you had moved during the school year.

Also in Texas and I can echo most of what @Boopers: said. In our ISD even if you early register on the Spring, you still need to reverify in the month school starts that you are still living where you said you did earlier. What part of the state are you moving to?

Public schools usually needs proof of residence (multiple proofs). We needed one utility bill (within 60 days)and a home deed or mortgage statement. or an lease agreement.
One thing to note that happened to my friend... she had signed on a house but didn't officially close until 2 weeks after school started. The school district would not let her kids start school until she officially closed. She didn't want to start them at their old district and then switch within 2 weeks...so her kids just stayed home for the first two weeks.

@smocks: You might want to consider GCISD as well, which is very close to Carroll and some might argue has aspects that are more appealing. I’m in neither of those but close by in HEBISD.

@smocks: @boopers and @mamag are right. I'm in Dallas, very close to HPISD (but we zone to DISD) and understand your rent vs buy challenges.

If you decide to go for the rental in HPISD, be certain to check the map boundaries. If you're on the wrong side of the street, you could easily be in DISD. Property values and rents are very closely aligned to the school district map because of that.

@bhbee: am I correct in thinking that you'd still be in RISD, even if it wasn't your neighborhood school? They can't put you into a different ISD....right?

@bhbee: aaaahh, I had heard rumblings of that from some friends. This explains a lot!

@MamaG: there was CRAZY drama about that exact issue ... they wanted to build a new school and redraw and all the people who had paid top dollar to live by the one school had a fit as they’d lose property value if they lost that zone. Eventually the district backed down (is my understanding, could be wrong, it seemed complicated) so they are adding on to the school in question so they shouldn’t have to overflow in a couple years. It’s such a growth area for kids though that this isn’t the end I am thinking ... it’s just going to happen somewhere else, as long as job growth continues in dfw.

@smocks: I know you didn’t ask me but I have friends at a couple DISD schools who are happy with them. Lakewood and Stonewall Jackson are well thought of (and in expensive areas - we looked there but decided going a bit north (across a major road) to Richardson schools made more $ sense). People still have questions about the middle school level but doesn’t seem like that would be an issue at this point. Lakewood is huge, I think they had 9 kinder classes this year!

ETA: we had a friend move into the Lakewood zone well after kinder roundup and they did not have a problem getting a spot, I think they have space there.

@smocks: I would say that DISD is hit or miss depending on the actual school. As mentioned, Lakewood gets great reviews. We don't live anywhere near there, so I haven't personally looked into it.
Withers and Kramer are in less expensive neighborhoods (both zones include $$$ houses and cheaper ones) and I know a lot of people that go to both and love it. They are both known for their dual language immersion programs. I also know people at both schools that don't live in the zones, but were able to transfer in.

We are not in DISD (DS is in a 2's class at daycare right now), but I'm happy to share what I have learned if you want to wall me.
