she's five and the first day of school (she went to pre-k there and is going into kindergarten) is her birthday. how would you celebrate if it was you? i don't want to send her to school with sugary treats the first day but I would love to send her with goodie bags for the kids and teacher in her class. ideas??

Are you going to have an open house before the first day of school? I'd ask the teacher what she/he'd prefer.

@regberadaisy: yes!! i love this. my mil was saying to remember nobody is aware of any food allergies so be careful wth any snax on the first day. what do you think about like stickers and lifesavers?

@rosegold: oh such a good point about allergies!!! Love stickers but I'm a sweets nazi so I wouldn't be too happy about hard candies/gummies?. Are most 5 year olds pretty capable with hard candies? And I'm not sure if they're safe with peanut allergies ? Ie they might be made in a factory where peanuts are used?

What about a small pack of crayons, eraser, stickers and pencil of her favorite characters?

how about coloring activity books at the dollar store? with crayons? perfect for kindergartners.

@blackbird: it worked out really well that back to school shopping was just that little bit more special since the first day is on her birthday. we splurged and she's giddy! donuts, i wish! drooool.

I would not send stuff to school, honestly. I would ask the teacher if they do something on the birthday and follow her lead. If she needs an idea, there's a great activity in circling a globe the number of years old that you are.

I would ask your teacher beforehand....all teachers know how crazy the first day of school is, but as a former Kindergarten teacher myself, that first day of school is ESPECIALLY hectic.
Throwing in another first day responsibility might stress the teacher out. The day flies by and I would worry your treats might get forgotten. It might be fine if she can plan ahead to fit it in, or it might be best to wait a couple of days to bring things in once things calm down (Or as calm as they can get in a K class! :happy:)
I would definitely remind the teacher that it will be your child's birthday though - most classes have some sort of little routine they do to celebrate, but they are usually small scale like a song and a birthday hat or something.

I agree about talking to the teacher. Maybe there is a way you can help distribute the treats at the end of the day so it is not a stress on her.

Agreed on talking to the teacher first. It is the 1st day of school so lots going on already. Plus, some kids might expect something "special" every day since it happened on the 1st day of school so need to bench the expectation. Totally do something extra special for her though! Either before and/or after school to mark the occasion!

@rosegold: Definitely ask the teacher! For birthdays the only thing we can do/send in is the child's favorite book and the teacher will read it (that was the rule for K)
