It's so common to have little boys named after the dad, and even more presumed if it's a 3rd or 4th, etc. But do you know anyone that named their little girl after the mom? I don't mean grandma, but baby's actual mom? I think there must be some stigma against it (maybe because of the last name thing?)
* Only example I could come up with is Lorelei for Gilmore Girls (and daughter Lorelei was called Rory).

Not quite the same thing but sort of close: we thought about Sadie for a while (if we'd had a girl, obviously). It's it's own name now, but was originally a nickname for Sarah (my name).

One of my best friends growing up was named after her mom, but goes by her middle name. I don't know why it doesn't happen more often...

I'd totally do this. The other option is to give her your maiden name. I had a classmate in elementary school who's mom did that.

My middle name, my mom's middle name, my grandma's middle name, and my great grandma's middle name are all the same. I'm killing the tradition though... I just don't like the name very much.

My sister and I are both named after my mom - I got her middle name as my middle, sister got her first name as a middle name. I've always loved it.
If we ever have a girl, I want to give her my maiden name and my great grandmother's name - _____ Grace.

I told DH we had to give LO my maiden name as a middle name because I will never be able to have a Child named for me. I hate my middle name and my first name isn't suitable as a middle name and it'd be too confusing have two of me in the house. I told DH all the kids get his last name and it wasn't fair... Somehow LO ended up named for DH twice

@Arden: My middle name is my mom's first name and my grandma's first name. If we have a girl, we will do a nickname of it (Mae for Mary).
@shopaholic: I don't think it's done that often and there is no logical reason, really, except that junior seems like a boy name. But my mom is Mary Ann and her mom is Mary, so I think that was sort of common for their generation (my dad refers to all my mom's female relatives as Mary Mary because there were so many Mary Somethings..)

I'm not a fan of naming kids after myself (or anything after yourself, really-- like Disneyland? I should open a Nguyenland)-- it feels egotistical to me. But if it's already a tradition to name a son after a dad, I don't see anything wrong with naming a daughter after her mom!

My middle name is my mom's first name, and this baby's middle name is a derivative of that name, also. I thought about using my first name for her middle name, but I like how this one looks.
I have no issues with naming a girl after a mother...after all, the mom had to carry her! I even thought, at one point, of just giving her my name, but reversed...my middle name for her first and my first for her middle. But we like the name we picked.
Why should dads have all the honor? lol

We'll be doing something kind of along these lines. Our plan is to give our hypothetical son a shortened version of my mothers maiden name for his first name and our hypothetical daughter my middle name for her middle name. Call me a feminist but I don't think the fathers family should be the only one represented in future generations. My family is just as important so I'd like for a little bit of me/them to be passed down.

Yes one of my old manager's daughter is named after. The call her Little Debbie. She explained mother-daughter "juniors" is common among Latinos.

A girl in my childbirth class told us that she was going to name her daughter Rebecca after herself because it is the most beautiful name in the world. I thought she was weird...lol

My mom has her formal, legal name... And then the name she goes by, which everyone considers her real name. She named me the latter. So she's M____ and growing up I was Little M____.
not doing that with my daughters though! But that's just us!

I would most definitely use my middle name. It's my great-grandmother's maiden name and most people in my family have it for a middle name. I'm a little sad I didn't use it for DS but I wanted to honor my dad.

@MarieJ: I know a family with two girls and they did the same thing so mom and both girls share a middle name and they get such a kick out of it!
My aunt is named after my grandmother but goes by something else and I knew a woman from Poland who named her daughter after herself complete with "junior" attached which I admit struck me as odd.

My mom, grandma and great grandma all have the same legal first name, Jewell!
What's funny is that none of them go by/went by it! My great grandma went by Francis (her middle name), my grandma went by Judy (random name that she just picked up lol) and my mom goes by Lazel (her middle name). Odd

If we have a boy, the first name will be my mom's maiden name, shortened a little. If we have a girl, the middle name is my mom's name, which is also my middle name. I love my mom and the name is unique looking due to French spelling but easy to pronounce, so I want it to become a tradition.
When I got older and realized my mom made my middle name her first name though, I thought that was weird. I could never imagine being like "oh we need a middle name? How about... my name?"

Wow! Lots of cool traditions here! My maiden name is also a very common first name and we already have 2 in the family.
@Chillybear: BTW, DH LOVES what they did with their kids' names! My name is too hard to change into much else and DH wanted every version or similar sounding of his name!
