DH took LO to a follow up appointment yesterday. Her dr says her pneumonia has improved but she still needs about 3 nebulizer treatments a day with albuterol solution.
How did you get your baby to stay still or calm? We have tried distracting her with TV and Youtube videos, doing it while she is sleeping (it just wakes her up and makes her hysterical), and strapping her into the high chair and nothing seems to work well.

My baby would always just be quite calm, do you use it with the mask?
We hold her in our arms and hold the nebulizer infront of her face. she is very curious and likes to touch it and eventually it puts her to sleep because of the constant humming sound

@autumnlove: We dont use the mask, so I guess its less bothersome, we use it without the mask at our doctors suggestion. BUT our LO didnt have pnuemonia though, just wheezing and coughing.

We didn't have to use the mask but just held it up to her while she was sleeping.

So DD sits in my lap facing tv. I wedge her arm between my elbow bc if not shell pull the tube.Sometimes I have to put mask, on with no machine/loud noise on to get her used to just the feel of the mask. DH turn on machine when it is over her face...if DH is there because somehow I feel the steam bothers her eyes. If I think of anything else, I'll post again.
She usually cries for a few mins. Sometimes the whole time. Sometimes not at all. It depends. They say the crying is good bc it gets medicine straight to the lungs..that's what I tell myself to endure.

How old is LO? We last did treatments for two weeks straight when LO was about 4 months. I found it easiest to rock her during treatments. And if she was particularly struggle I'd sing directly into her ear. We sang many versus of Old McDonald during these treatments. But it seemed to at least keep her distracted enough to get through the treatments. Sometimes during the middle of the night I could rock her back to sleep, but we could never do them laying flat in her crib.

My LO just recovered from pneumonia and could not do the nebulizer without being hysterical so instead they prescribed an inhaler and a inhaler chamber with mask. That worked better for us since it was a shorter treatment and did not have a loud noise.

we never used the mask. they hated it. charlie didn't like the nebulizer, but singing to him really helped a lot. and reading books. olive was much better with the nebulizer.

I think they have masks that look like animals which might make it less scary. Also put water in the medicine cup and let her put the mask on a stuffed animal and you so she sees it isn't scary. And, try putting a blanket or pillow over the machine so it's not so loud. Finally, bribe. If all else fails give her 3 m and m's or something (if she's old enough) or a sticker.

@autumnlove: hope it gets better! My LO is only 15 mo.. We have to hold the mask over his face, and puff the inhaler. Then wait till he breathes 6 times. Then repeat after 1 min. It ended up working for us since otherwise he would have to use the nebulizer for 10 min at least and he would just cry the entire time.

I sit in the glider with my knees up and put him on my legs facing me. He is always pretty calm since he can see me.

@autumnlove: oh good. Sorry for all the errors in the last post. I was trying to get it out to you when LO was around so I couldn't proofread on the ipad. But I know how desperate I felt in the situation when i was learning and needed tips. I never tried the stuffed animal, singing or facing me. Those sound like great ideas. LO did act out her 'trauma' by doing nebulizer treatments on her doll around your LOs age. Advised by a nurse, if LO was super upset we used to do just a few minutes in some early treatments and she seemed to get enough medicine even though it wasn't a full treatment.

@autumnlove: My LO is only 6 months so not all that mobile. At the hospital they gave it to him with the "mouth" attachment and just held it by his face while he sat. At home he tries to eat the mask and hates it. I am going to try giving him a teething toy and then putting the mask around it.
Also how long does it run? Ours is done quickly--less than 10 minutes so though he hates it... it's only 10 minutes to endure.

@pastemoo: she is tolerating it better but still screams and fights it for the first few minutes. Lately, she dozes off towards the end of the session!
