We are leaving for vacation next Sat and I need some cheap toys for R. I have like 6 new books (thank you Target dollar spot) but what else is good. She seems bored with everything else we keep in the car.
We are going to get something to hang the ipad if we get desperate.
I have a feeling it is going to be a long 5 hours.

@autumnlove: Duh! I forgot that I ordered that and it should be here today. She just gets so bored quickly, I am scared for this trip since she won't nap more then an hour now in the car.

so I know it sounds crazy, but my LO is 2 and she LOVES LOVES LOVES those eggs with little toys inside. So I get a big bag full and I make her remove the plastic that holds the plastic egg sealed, then she has fun taking everything out. It takes a while to get the plastic off and sometimes I'll get it started by making a teeny tiny tear in it, but I let her work on it cause that takes a few minutes plus the few minutes to remove everything, admire the stickers and little toys. And she'll play with one for a LONG time putting it back in, closing the egg and opening it back up. I also have a caddy that hooks to her car seat that holds books and other toys. I attached a picture so you can see what it is.

Music. My LO loves singing in the car. Family sing a longs are ridiculously hokie but I'm down for whatever keeps LO happy.

Those stuffed animals with buckles on them (anything with buckles really) are great at keeping my daughter occupied! She is usually just happy to look out the window or at the mirror at herself and listen to music on car trips, though. Snacks help too! Hehe

lo really likes cars and trucks. He always likes them, but they keep him busy in the car for a long time. He spins the wheels and drives them on his legs

in the car, we use a magnadoodle, a mini toy laptop LO loves, a CD playing with kids songs on it that LO likes to "sing" to, any kind of snack, etc. Now that she's FF though, she likes the car much much better.

Lift the flap books! Agree about CDs with kids singing. I keep a bag full of random toys I can pass back but I try to use them sparingly now that L is getting old enough to pay attention to stuff outside of the window (current favs: big trucks, cranes, bridges). Finger puppets, baby dolls, stickers, annoying talking toys (fisher price remote, leap frog phone). Animal crackers.
