My LO sounded similar to yours except he LOVED push toys. We had a turtle lawn mower push toy that he could not get enough off, he would push it across the room and look at us to flip him around so he can push it back to the other side of the room.

He did not walk unassisted till 17-18 months old.

He would pull himself up to standing position on a the dinning table or the coffee table and try to take some steps towards something... for the first 2 months he would fall flat on his back and cry for us. Poor kid. He eventually got it though.

I don't know if this is comforting but it comforted me a bit. One of my co-worker is a guy and he was a super early walker, about 8 months old but his legs are bull legged and the doctors said it was due to walking so young and putting weight on his legs when he was young and he has issues with that all his life so when he had kids he did not want them to walk early! Haha. I don't know how true this is but he is bull legged is all I can really confirm. Also he may have just been trying to comfort me about my son being a late walker since he's a nice guy and I mentioned to him that LO was walking late.

A walked at 17 months, I was so worried up until then but one day she just started doing it and took off, she was a pro!

My close friends daughter didn't walk until she was almost 17 months old. Now she is running around everywhere!

My LO walked at 14.5 months but he was so much like the babies described above. He's just a super cautious kid. He never did the drunken wobbles, wasn't interested in push toys (well, he did like the RadioFlyer wagon), and he was a super fast and efficient crawler. When he did decide to walk, he walked 10 feet the first time. The next day he walked across our house. He has always been the type of kid to build his confidence and wait until he was able to do something 100%.

@Mrs Green Grass: I actually didn't walk until 22 months. My mom says that I liked to be carried or wheeled in the stroller and wasn't interested in walking at all. One day, I just started walking.

On a side note... there is this Chinese saying that says that it's better to be late walker because that means you will be a "boss" instead of a "worker". Aka you will command people to do work instead of being the one does the manual work.

Which means that person will have a better future because there are a lot of good qualities related to being a leader.

Again not sure how true this or if it even is a Chinese motto because my mom told me this and she tends to make things up.

Olive walked at 18 months. Didn't cruise much and pushed a cart on her knees rather than walking with it. I wasn't worried though and it just happened really fast!

@Mrs Green Grass: I should add: the shy and cautious lessened DRAMATICALLY after he learned to walk. So maybe he was so timid because he felt inferior to other kids his age because they all walked?

We are just a shy of 17 months and LO took her first unassisted steps last monday (more like a little shuffle of the feet, but I will take it!) She does love push toys, but won't hold our hands to walk. She is so stubborn. Totally understand the worry!! I have been thinking of going back to the ped for her language development though, I think we should maybe look into help. We have maybe one word, mama? I question if it counts cause she keeps saying it, mamamamama... but I think she knows it is me and she says it to me to get my attention. Her receptive language is amazing but expressive is pretty much nonexistent.

I don't post here often but I wanted to log-in specifically to comment on this post. My son JUST took his first steps this past weekend at 18 months, 20 days old. He was also a late crawler, waiting until 11 months old to do that. He still does not really stand without holding on to something (so he can't balance and stand, but he can stand holding onto furniture, etc.), but he is doing SO well with the walking just in the last few days.

Were you or your husband late walkers? Our pediatrician said it can often run in families. My husband didn't walk until he was 20 months old, so when we noticed M was slow on gross motor skills, we expected this would be the case all along.

Hang in there! It's easy to worry but your LO WILL walk soon!

My DD took her first steps at 16.5 months and didn't start walking as her regular mode of transit for another 2-3 weeks after that. Now at almost 18 months, she can almost run and only crawls when needed (tunnels and playgrounds). She was never late on her other gross milestones - she sat at 6 months, crawled at 8 months and cruised at 12 months. She just wasn't interested at all in walking, it seemed! She'd climb stairs or walk holding our fingers, but she'd avoid all push toys and would drop to crawling if we tried to let go of her fingers. We had her checked out by EI physical therapists who agreed she was just taking her time, and sure enough, she's just fine! If your docs aren't worried, I'd try not to be either. If you're worried and stressed and haven't had anyone take a look at him, I'd do that for your own peace of mind. Hopefully though, he's just waiting until he can run!

@Mrs Green Grass: I remembered your story and figured he was, but I know for myself, it's easier to relax when I've got people I trust and know better than me who can weigh in and say it'll all be fine. Hang in there! It'll be so exciting to hear about it when he finally gets going!

I'm glad you wrote this post. Georgia is nearly 17 months old and still no walking. The latest thing she's doing it (very occasionally) standing without assistance, but it's all her own choosing. If we try to help her 'walk', she crumples. Stubborn!

@Mrs Green Grass: That gives me hope!

I have a late walker...he is 15 months old and fits a lot of the descriptions I'm seeing here - stubborn, cautious, won't allow us to help him practice (collapses to his knees if we try), hates push toys, etc. He is in EI (early intervention) and as far as the walking goes they see no reason for him to physically be unable to do it, he bears weight/pulls up/cruises just fine...he just doesn't want to walk. And none of their tricks/tips/tools are working. I'm having a tough time being chill about it because I'm 7 months pregnant and completely terrified at the thought of caring for a newborn (particularly if I need a repeat c-section) while having a 17 month old that still won't walk! But from what you ladies are saying, it doesn't sound like there's much I can do about it other than wait. And of course he's also in the 90th percentile for weight, so he's getting pretty heavy for me to carry around all the time!
