Does your neighborhood have a pool? When does it open? If not, do you join a pool in the summer?

We don't have a neighborhood pool. I'm not a fan of public pools.

Yes, we do. The largest one in the state is a five minute walk from here. I'm not a huge fan of public pools, but I'm pretty sure once LO is old enough, she will want to have a membership. It is what the kids do here.

Public pools kind of gross me out. Sometimes I'll use the one at the gym. My parents have a pool & live pretty close, so in the summer sometimes I use their pool

Ours doesn't, but ill join a place with a pool. They have a fun class to get babies used to the water and water zumba.

@mrbee: planters warts (I've never had them, but everyone I knew that spent summers at public pools got them), they have to put so much stuff in them to kill the germs that when I get out my skin is all itchy & dry & my hair gets fried. And i dont like hanging out in a swimsuit in public- but that's my own fault! Wow, that sounds negative! Lol, they're not that bad, but you asked what's wrong with them, so you got my negative list=D

@mrbee: For me it isn't the germ issue, it just isn't something I'm really into. If I'm lounging by the pool, I prefer serenity and cocktails!

We have a pool (we rent the other side of my in-laws duplex, so we don't have to care for it - win!), my mom and aunt both have pools. I plan on floating all summer with a giant belly!
We also plan to start 'swim lessons' indoor with Olivia when she's 6 months so get her used to it for next summer!

Wow. I have never in my life had a problem with a public pool and I was practically raised in one! I can't wait for ours to open. I may suck it up and test out the water if it's warm enough Memorial Day weekend. At least people won't worry about the whale drowning.

We have a neighborhood pool. It's opened on the weekends for the month of May. We haven't gone yet but we will soon! The association hands out wristbands so people that don't live here can't swim. I think it keeps it from getting too crowded.

We don't have a neighborhood pool but a lot of my friends do so I'll be visiting them often with my big pregnant belly this summer : )
I think there is a difference between a public pool that ANYONE can use, and a pool that is part of a private club or a gated neighborhood. I grew up practically living at our pool and tennis club. But a truly public pool does gross me out.

I have never been to one. How do you define "public pool"? I think you can pay to swim at the pool in the middle school. Is that public?

Our apartment complex has a pool but we haven't gone swimming in it. We've talked about going a few times since it opened but it's been super busy. I think it opened last month.
Lucky for us, there are pools on post available to us. We took DS swimming for the first time last weekend. It was an indoor, olympic size pool which was great. There was tons of room and we didn't have to worry about DS getting sunburn.

There are no outdoor pools near us (that i know of). Then again, I live in Maine so pools are pretty unnecessary. I wouldn't mind getting a hot tub though!

@Andrea: well, good point. I read through Mr.Bee's public vs private post and realized this may be confusing. Our neighborhood pool is private to just our neighbors. The pool I grew up in was members only. I have never been in a truly public pool where you don't have to be a member to swim in it... I guess even hotel pools would be private since you have today at the hotel to swim there.

Yes, afternoons. We're going to start going. Only drawback...it's not heated and you can't do laps. LO should love it though.

Our city has a municipal pool with endless amounts of courses. We don't have a public pool out in the open like other cities, maybe it's because almost every second house has a pool in their backyard.

@mediagirl: yeah, like a water park?! That is the only public pool I can remember going into.

Our community pool opens in a couple weeks, and I can't wait to take LO.
@mrs. bird: not to freak you out, but I worked at public, private, and gym pools throughout high school and college, and in my experience, indoor gym pools always had the highest chlorine levels and what I considered the germ-iest floors. The ground around an outdoor pool is exposed to the elements in addition to being cleaned. Indoor gym pool floors aren't necessarily cleaned as often or as deeply as you might imagine.
