New England Bees - I just heard a story on the radio about some house that caved in because of all the snow and ice that's built up on their roof this winter and it's gotten me totally freaking out!
Do you have a house? How much snow have you gotten?? Have you cleaned any of the snow off your roof??? Should I be panicking this much right now???

Did you have rain? We had some yesterday and tomorrow is supposed to be an all day rain-fest, so I am not so much worried about the roof right now, as I am about flooding.

Whatever you do, dont go up on the roof yourselves to clean it. They had something on the news about how dangerous that is. I'm not sure what they recommended instead though. Our house is 4 stories so there's not much accessing the roof that's gonna happen here.

@looch: We haven't had rain yet, but we're supposed to get some more snow and ICE tonight - so I'm worried about how heavy that will all be!!!! Gahhh!!!
@ShootingStar: I'm afraid of heights, so there's no way I'd go onto our roof anyway, haha! We have a roof rake so in the past, we've cleared off the lower portions of the roof that we can reach and that usually is enough so that the rest can have room to spread out.

We have a few feet at least and DH cleaned ours off with a roof take last night because he was worried with the rain. It was so heavy! We have had leaks in the past so I'm glad he did it. We certainly don't need a collapsed roof!

We have a few feet of snow on our roof. Yesterday it rained which took some of it away, but now everything in our yard is covered in ice, which would lead me to believe the roof is the exact same way. Which of course freaks me out because now it's probably even heavier. I'm going to make my husband clean it off this weekend, hopefully our front porch makes it until then

@bushelandapeck: @junebugmama: Ugh, I'm so worried about this, especially because it's supposed to be warm today and then cold tonight PLUS it's supposed to snow/rain/sleet/ice/etc. Maybe I'll try to rake the edges tonight if I can!

definitely roof rake!! I come from an area that gets A LOT of snow, and most people have a roof rake, pending on their roof slope. Raking it will get the weight off and allow it to spread. It also prevents ice jams!

We got close to 3' of snow three years ago, and we didn't clean off our roof.
We've got a little over a foot of snow right now '(total accumulation over a period of time) but the sun has melted off nearly everything from our roof.

Not just New England - MN has that risk every single winter. And usually there are a handful of homes where that happens every year. It is unfortunate. But you will actually see people shoveling their roofs after a big snow. But that can be just as dangerous.

We've gotten well over 2 feet in the last two weeks. DH climbed up and shoveled it off last Sunday.

Oh god --- that freaks me out! We have major icicles lining the front of our house and I keep checking for leaks. We just moved into our home in November so it's our first winter!
I'm hoping this warmer weather we have for the next few days does a LOT of melting!
@MrsScottish: does a roof rake reach to the top of a two story home from the ground?? I feel like we should probably do this.

@hellobeeboston: We noticed a GIGANTIC set of icicles (at least 10 feet long!) dripping right down into the kids' water table on our deck. The entire water table is encased in ice from the dripping icicle! It's quite a sight. Haha. It will be interesting to see how it all comes out when everything melts.

From MI here and things have been collapsing all over. We have a very steep roof so going up there is almost impossible. However, we have attics all throughout the upstairs so our heat (unfortunately) escapes up through there and keeps the snow limited. A good and bad thing! I'm worried about the rain coming today though my basement will likely flood.

I'm in NY but we already have a leak b/c our gutters are so iced up! Our roof is pretty old and already need replacing so I'm so afraid there are more leaks coming! I'm really hoping these couple of warmers days + rain will melt everything.

We have a small leak from the bay window in our living room so DH has been on the roof several times to clear it off. Our gutters are frozen solid so the water has no where else to go! Hopefully the melting we get today will help with that. I'm not too worried about our roof caving, I think that's pretty rare. FWIW, we are in CT.

Yes, I'm terrified of this!! Our house has a very steep roof, and I have read that many homes in New England have steep roofs to combat this sort of problem. but i still worry. I am hoping the warmer temps will melt some of the snow!!!

We have about 2 feet on the ground but luckily not nearly as bad on most of the roof. There is an area over an addition that doesn't have as steep a slope so I'm a little nervous about that. And over the doorway to the basement because it's in the shade but it's not structural or anything so I'm not too worried about that. Hoping that the "warmth" and sun this morning will help melt more of it off!
I was more concerned about some icicles causing damage that we had last week and couldn't reach to knock off. They were enormous!

We get that risk around here, but mostly because our roofs aren't made to deal with that much snow.
