I'll like to get my almost 3 year old a new toy for our road trip coming up. We already have a etch a sketch, Color Wonder book & markers, paper & crayons, lacing animals.
Any other suggestions for small independent play items for a 3 year old in the car?

My DD loves colorforms or a travel size magna doodle or aqua doodle.

Legos? I put legos into a washed wipes container and hot glued a green lego square on top so she can play with legos on the go. You can always do the threading toys - like buttons and necklace beads onto string/pipe cleaners. I give Paige a quarter sheet pan and let her play magnets too.
The best road trip toy is a movie but that's my last last last resort.

@aegie: he plays with the sets with the teeny tiny pieces now. he got a ton for his birthday. it's the gift of choice for 5 year old boys! i think they're too hard before 5 though.
