We actually ended up not using the name Kipton for my DS, because my mom called him 'Kippy' in the delivery room after he was born. Ummm... no mom.

This is horrible but my mom called my daughter "beaner" one time. I used to call her my jelly bean when I was pregnant and then after she was born she said "well you'll just be my little beaner!"

Apparently she had no idea what she was saying and my sister and I had to educate her. It was ridiculous.

DS is Michael. Until he is old enough to request otherwise, he is ONLY Michael. We have made that abundantly clear, but my FIL still calls him Mike or Mikey, which drives me bonkers. (To be fair, they are both totally normal, and common nicknames, but DH and I have made it clear that we prefer Michael).

"Henry" was on our short list, but DH insisted on nicknaming him "Hank" so that was immediately vetoed....we live in TX and could only think of the show 'king of the hill'.

I often call DS "goose" (short for "silly goose"), but if I slip and call him "Lucy Goosey" he always replies "no momma, I'm not Lucy. My friend is Lucy - I am Michael!"

Neither of my girls have easy nicknames (one of my naming criteria). But sometimes I'll hear people call my Chloe "Clo-Clo". WHAT?!?!?

My younger has a classmate at daycare that has a very similar name, so they will call my girl by her full first last name or her initials. It bothers my husband that they use her initials. I'm not the least bothered as my work circle does this A LOT!

My older girl has nicknamed my niece "Stinky". Niece is now 19. But she proudly lets her little cousin call her Stinky.

My mom has a ton of nicknames for DD and I dislike most of them. They all started because she didn't really like the name we chose, thankfully the older DD gets the less she uses the really obnoxious ones. And on our last trip DD, who is 2.5, asked my mom to stop using one. It made my day!

I did make my MIL stop calling her Miss Bossy - it was just so unnecessary.

MIL calls him "nn Prince" 🙄 She even had a shirt made.

@MrsLonghorn: We're the same way except our DS is Matthew. We prefer to use Matthew & my mom tried to call him "Mattie." I vetoed that quickly. We're ok if he wants to shorten it when he's older.

Sometimes people call my son Willy. I make it known pretty clearly that is not ok and so far people get the hint.

My daughter is Anna and I HATE HATE HATE when people call her Annie. I'm totally fine with Anne, but Annie is not even shorter- it's the same number of syllables and an extra letter. It even bothers me less when people call her Hannah. I don't know why it drives me up the wall, but I always correct people when they do it.

@littlebug: giant ugh to the Royal Baby. My MIL called the baby Prince (Firstname) and without even thinking I immediately said: "oh my god, we hate that." Worked wonders some people are almost impossible to deter in their preciousness and bad taste.

@MrsLonghorn: Yes totally King of the Hill. Henry/Hank is so weird, I've never understood why it's a nn. Kind of like Margaret/Peggy. But good for you for sticking with your guns on Michael! it isn't so hard.

@Mrs. Lion: @Meowkers: yep, my mom hates the name we chose so much that she kept calling our son by his first initial + middle name. Like, R. Peter. She finally stopped not when I asked her to nicely, but when I called her out on hating the name we chose The best part is that I'm sure none of us have difficult or bizarre or offensive names here.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: All the grandparents call our older child "the princess." Not really the same because not so much TO her as ABOUT her, but yeah. Since your LO is a boy and she had to make the shirt that would have had me laughing...aaaaand saying the shirt got lost at daycare/wherever.

Most of my kids' nicknames are things I have called them at one point. When my son was a newborn I made a joke and the nn stuck with MIL who thought it would be funny for her to repeat over and over and over again, and we had to put the brakes on that, but other than that I haven't had any that stuck long enough to be upset/irritated.

When my daughter was only a few weeks old my MIL tried to give her the nickname "mimi". Her name is Emma. There is no relevance there and the nickname wasn't shorter than her already short name! You can't just pick a random name out of thin air and decide that is the child's nickname. I shut that down the minute she suggested it.

@bubblegum: @LCTBQE: @2littlepumpkins: here's the back of the shirt. On the front is a much larger crown above his regular nick name. I had it wrong she calls him "Prince nn." MIL literally cried the first time she saw him wearing it. When I picked him up from daycare the teachers all said the other parents loved the shirt. Huh? LOL
