If you shop at TJMaxx, would you take a minute to call/email/Facebook them and complain that they do not have changing tables? I asked my local store why there was no changing table and I was told they were not allowed to have one. Then I called the corporate number and asked why. The rep had to put me on hold and finally came back to say she didn't have an approved answer but could only confirm that they do not have changing tables in TJMaxx stores. Said she could not say why. What the what?! They have a children's section, toys, moms and families shop there all the time and no changing tables? Maybe if they get enough complaints that will change.

@rachiecakes: Really? Every one I have every been to has a customer restroom. (I am a frequent pee-er so I use the bathroom almost everywhere I go haha.)

@rachiecakes: I've never used one either. I think they have employee restrooms they'll let you use in a pinch.

All of the TJ Maxx, Ross, Marshalls I have been to have restrooms for customers. Sometimes I have had to go through a storage door to get to the bathroom, but they were definitely for customers. Until having a baby though I never paid attention to which retailers and restaurants have changing pads in them.

So many places don't have changing tables. My most recent gripe was with Honda. I was getting my car serviced and there was no changing table! They told me to use the table in the children's play area?!!! Gross.

@rachiecakes: sometimes you have to have an employee let you in but they are for customers.
But yes both the Marshall's and TJ Maxx near me don't have changing tables. One of them had a wide enough sink area that I laid a small changing pad on it but it was kind of gross.

I didn't realize this until a friend pointed it out, she was enraged enough that she changed her baby on a shelf she cleared... Not my preferred tactic but I understand the frustration. I'll message them.

I hate it even more when I visit a supposedly family-friendly restaurant but find that it has no changing table. It makes no sense.

Our tjmaxx bathroom is so disgusting I wouldn't even bring my baby in with me in the stroller the one time I had to go. It's odd when stores that cater to kids and to moms don't have them, but it's more annoying when only women's rooms have them! Honestly, in 2.5 years of parenting i have only used a public changing table twice. They gross me out, I'd rather just go to the car! If I have my stroller, I just lay it flat and do it there.

The TJ Maxx by me has a changing table in the family changing room, which is also big enough to bring my stroller in when I try on clothes. I wonder if this was a new addition?

I've been to the bathroom at many different tjmaxx (even today my four year old had to go). I thought they had changing tables...but now I can't remember clearly. I'll check next time but if they don't then it's a shame.

I would guess it has something to do with theft. I went to a children's store with my son and needed a dressing room so he could try on pants. They told me they lock them and. Don't allow them to be used because people steal.

I guess what I find so frustrating is that the bathrooms are usually very large and have more than enough room for one. And it's not like it's a place where no one brings kids. I don't see how a changing table would make it any easier to steal than accessing a stall would. And yes, I could go to the car but that is inconvenient and it's been in the 90s where I live for months so that is also hot for baby and for me.

I never noticed this! And with 2 LO's that have potty trained we've been in our fair share of their bathrooms. The only thing I've ever noticed is how disgusting their bathrooms are. It is a pain not to have one available in the case of an emergency blow out or something.

I think changing tables in public bathrooms are disgusting and can't bring myself to use them anyway.

@looch: I'm pretty sure I've always been told to leave store items outside the bathroom- regardless of baby with me or not. I would guess it's more of a liability thing- like they can't get sued if a baby falls off a changing table or grabs a loose nail on it or something if there is no changing table.

Ours don't have them either.... In an emergency I would just cover a bench in the fitting room with a receiving blanket and change them there.

@Foodnerd81: think like a thief...they're not leaving the stuff outside, they're jamming it into the stroller/ baby carriage and then bringing it into the bathroom to cut the tags off.

@turquoisemama: @SweetCaroline: LO1 I usually changed in the car- she was afraid of loud bathrooms anyway. LO2 I still rarely use the changing pads for. They do gross me out too.

@looch: couldn't they do that in a regular bathroom with no changing table? (Says the mom who accidentally stole a nursing bra from Target when it slid under the car seat in the big part of the cart...) I guess I don't often think like a thief though.

I actually prefer to use my car, some of those changing stations are so nasty.

I almost always found it easier to just change my kids in the car no matter where I was because the majority of changing tables were just disgusting, even with a pad down.

@Foodnerd81: Haha, me too. My son stole a pair of socks from the store once. We got home and he had them in the seat of the stroller, not sure, if he grabbed them when we walked by or what. But we got through the checkout with no one noticing or saying a thing.
Stealing happens everywhere, especially at these discount department stores. People are not above using their kids as a distraction (stuffing the merchandise in the seat, the basket, the diaper bag). So giving them a way to get into an unattended or unmonitored location (re: Bathrooms) doesn't seem like a smart logistical move for a business.
I also personally shop there because they have low prices, so I wouldn't even think of calling to ask them to install change tables as it would increase their overhead and they'd pass that along to the consumer. But that's just me.

I'd rather change DD in the car, those changing tables are gross! I think it's pretty easy to change her in the car.
