So we'll go through a whole summer before our LO turns 6 months (if she ever ARRIVES. ugh), we have a trip to the east coast planned. We'll go to the beach and go out on my parents boat... plus when we get home we have a waterpark day with DH's work. The baby will obviously be too young to go in the water or anything like that, but I am wondering how to keep her safe from the sun? I'll probably mostly be carrying her in the moby, does that help?
I am so clueless.

I've always hear you are just supposed to protect them from the sun until they can wear sunscreen. Like with sun hats, maybe SPF treated clothing? (http://www.iplaybabywear.com/iplay/swim-sun/sun-protection-clothing.html)
You could ask your pediatrician, too. They may recommend an exception to the rule if you're going to be out a lot?

DH just asked his dermatologist this question last week - he said cover them up completely and wear a hat.

@sslm: Our doc gave us the OK for sunscreen at 4 months since it's already getting really hot here. As long as your LO doesn't seem to have sesitive skin I bet you could probably get the OK a little earlier... but prior to 4 months I would just keep her in the shade 24/7!

Our kids wore floppy widebrim sunhats last summer to protect neck and face. They have some at target right now. Otherwise we just kept them covered within the carrier, in thin long layers if exposed, and kept the sunshades up if they were in the carseat.

We took our 8 week old to the beach last week, and just kept her under the umbrella. She just wore a romper. It's too humid here for pants & long sleeves. She has a few sun hats that we put on her if she's in the stroller or carrier. We plan on starting sunscreen at 4 months, since that will be when it really starts getting hot here & we'll be going to the beach much more.

We have kept LO out of the sun and covered up. Plan on asking at Ped appointment for permission to use occasionally starting at 4mo since its so hot here.

Our pediatrician told us to always keep the umbrella over her stroller and cover her with a hat. I used to carry an umbrella if I was wearing her in the baby carrier.
For really hot days our pediatrician told us we could use a little sunscreen before 6 months, but we just used the umbrella instead

Honestly, we just stayed in the shade all last summer....which meant that I got no tan whatsoever! We used an umbrella at the beach and hung out under big trees at the park.

I am super prone to sunburn, so we did Arbonne sunscreen since it is all natural. My mom warned that my first sunburn I was 3m old and under an umbrella. We tried California baby, but the smell was terrible. We just gave her a bath right after we came in from the sun. She was a Memorial Day baby, so we couldn't avoid the sun all summer. We made it through with no sunburn and she seems to be just fine.

@sslm: Our pediatrician said that natural is better than a sunburn at such an early age. She did say to bathe her really well right after, which we always did. But, I am also red headed with very fair skin, so it is a good chance that LO would burn like I do.

@babynumber1: yeah both DH and I are fair skinned and DH burns super easy, so I'm pretty sure LO will be similar.
So I think I'll buy some natural sunscreen as a backup but mostly try to keep her covered up!!

@sslm: I agree, I wouldn't say its fair game at any age, but we live in FL and its hard to avoid harsh sun. We would put it on her, use hats and umbrellas when we could. Then we would bath her that night.

We used sunscreen a couple of times before 6 months. In my opinion it's better to avoid a burn (which CAN happen in the shade and which IS proven dangerous). I wouldn't do it every day but I don't think a couple times is too bad....

Our pediatrician gave us the go-ahead at 4 months and said the local children's hospital recommends either California Baby or Blue Lizard for babies that young. Mostly though, we'll just stay in the shade with floppy hats.

I plan to check with our ped about this, as well. I wouldn't use something like Coppertone, but I'm wondering about a natural, mineral sunscreen. You can still get sunburned in the shade (I have)!

Our doctor also said yes to sunscreen at 4 months as long as we wash it off in the bath that night. We also made sure to keep her in the shade as much as possible, put a hat on her, etc.

Thanks everyone for your input! I just bought a carseat cover that has uv protection, and my mom has made a couple of baby sun hats! Luckily it doesn't get too hot where we're going, so we'll just be careful

We're due in June and planning to go to the beach for a week at the end of July. As much as I love laying on the beach, I'm planning on getting beach walks in during the early a.m. before the sun gets really hot and then staying at the pool during the day so the baby can be under cover/in the AC if needed. Good to know about the sunblock!

Our doc told us to use it, but DS was 3 months old during last summer, so maybe that's why. I would ask your doc when go.
