We attended a music class at a toy's store this morning. There was a 3-4 year old girl there wearing a flouncy skirt....with no underpants. It was quite obvious when she rolled on the floor and kicked her legs over her head. Her dad was with her. I live in a pretty "free" town, but really? You don't force your kid to wear underpants even under protest? I was pretty creeped out.

@winniebee: uh. nuh-uh. Inappropriate. That's like our neighbors. None of the backyards are fenced in and they let their SIX year old daughter run around buck naked.

Yeah, I'd find that strange. But who knows - maybe the kid threw a fit and they couldn't get underwear on her for the life of them! Or maybe she took them off herself in secret! Who knows! Though I probably wouldn't leave the house if I couldn't get underwear on my kid!

Even for where you live, I think that's strange....We do not condone that in said state.

Sadly, my MIL has let my niece go free often before. Usually only when she's wearing pants or shorts but still....

Did the dad definitely notice she had no undies on? I only ask because I was out somewhere and there was a little girl of about 4 wearing a skirt and flashing her bits everywhere and suddenly her mom was like "WHERE IS YOUR UNDERWEAR!?" Apparently the kid had shed them in the car or something.
If the dad was totally aware his daughters parts were in display though...yeah that would make me feel awkward...

Ellie has some sensory issues and we don't force underwear, but she has to be wearing shorts or something else where you can't tell to go out in public. She did start wearing underwear last year at school because other kids were. I can see letting your child choose not to wear underwear, but if they also wanted to wear a skirt, I, personally, would say they were also "choosing" to stay home for the day. Mr. T and I fully expect to visit Ellie in a nudist colony one day

@winniebee: Actually, now that I think about it one of my first memories of getting in trouble was for not putting on underpants and then lying to my mom about it, so maybe it's more geographically appropriate than I led you to believe!

@Mrs. Twine: I have no issue with a kid not wearing underwear. It was the flouncy skirt and doing somersaults that was inappropriate!! I think the choice could have been no underwear of no skirt.

@Adira: They can be, and sometimes they don't grow out of it. She is working on it with her OT, and one of her goals is to be able to wear a pair of jeans for a full day.

And yanno, now that I think about it, this is one of those (RARE!) parenting issues that is, at least to me, a total no brainer! I mean, I am constantly second-guessing myself about seemingly EVERYTHING but this was an easy decision for me!

And we're on the same page. No underwear+skirt= stay home. Although once Ellie forgot underwear while wearing a dress and didn't tell me until we were three hours away from home... oops! But fortunately we had some shorts along. Actually, that was the day we met @Mrs. Pen!

yeah, underwear is a non-negotiable if you're wearing a skirt/dress. i even make my daughter wear bike shorts underneath. i don't want people seeing her underwear. it's just not attractive, too. she's always rolling around on the floor and kicking her legs up so her underwear could be on display.

So when I graduated from preschool, 20 some odd years ago, I went to go up on stage and my mom patted my bum & realized I had forgotten to put on my underwear. So I was commando under my dress, I got a stern, 'you sit like a lady & keep your dress down!' but what was she gonna do, leave?? Had she not patted my bum she wouldn't have even known. I was capable of dressing myself so she just assumed I had everything on, but I was excited about my new dress & got distracted.
Maybe she dressed herself and he didn't know until she was tumbling and then was just gonna laugh it off. I agree that knowingly allowing then to go without underwear with a skirt is inappropriate, but I feel like it was prob a one time thing & wasn't worth making a big deal out of to that dad, but I'm sure he'll make sure she doesn't forget in the future.

My daughter sometimes says no, but so far telling her she doesn't want dirt and bugs to get in her hiney has worked. We wouldn't be leaving the house, which things have gotten delayed a few times because an article of clothing was being refused.

Maybe the little girl is being potty trained? Isn't that something parents do at home with their kids - no pants to potty train. But am I the only super negative person that thinks no pants in public is crying out for a child molestor's attention?

I am a pretty free range parent - we're currently using the 'run around naked and pee on the floor' method of potty training. But hell NO would I let her run around without panties in public. There are things that are ok at home, among your family, and that's one of them.

I think no underwear for toddlers is okay if they're wearing pants/shorts.
Skirts/dresses.. LOL you can make a 2 year old wear underwear, so I don't get that dad!
