I was gonna buy the mesh crib liner, but that doesn't really help if LO bumps her head/body into the rail and cries... So I'm back to thinking about buying a regular padded crib bumper. She is almost 5 mo and doesn't really move when she sleeps (for now since we put her down asleep). She also had slept on her tummy w/o issues between like 2-4 mos.

I guess I'm confused, if she doesn't really move, why would you need the bumpers?
We had a day or two of bumps but he's figured it out now.

I bought both. He slept in the pack-n-play in our room until 3 months. Slept in his crib for another 3 months without any bumper. Then when he started getting his arms and legs stuck and crying about that I went to the mesh bumper and used it up until about a year and half old. Then I put his padded bumper on. At that point I was comfortable knowing that he had the neck and arm strength to move away from the bumper if needed. Plus the monitor we used watched his breathing so if it was ever a problem it would alert us. We used the bumpers until about 2 years old and then went to a toddler bed. Whatever route you choose to go buy on the cheap side because you just don't use that stuff for long.

We used them. We were pretty vigilant about making sure they were tied tightly and what not and it worked out. It wouldn't be my first choice but we did use them.

We bought the breathable bumpers and then realized they didn't work with our crib. We started using regular bumpers around 6 months (about 2 months ago) bc DS started getting his arms/legs stuck. Our ped okayed it but also DS is strong and mobile enough that he can definitely move away if needed. (He does 360 degree turns in his crib basically every night if that gives you a sense of how active he is!)

AAPsays no bumpers. Babies have been caught and strangled by bumpers, but a little head bump or bruise is no big deal. Even a broken leg from being caught in slats would be preferable to strangling. I'm strict about this one, there's just no benefit to all the risks.

If she's not moving around I don't think it's worth the risk. We opted not to use bumpers at all. I learned on here somewhere that the greatest risk is actually strangulation as opposed to suffocation so even the breathable bumpers made me too nervous. My LO is 2.5 now and has never had a limb stuck in the slats or bumped herself hard enough to have any sort of reaction. And she definitely moves around in her sleep.

We never used bumpers.
I guess I saw them more as a way of keeping her legs from getting stuck (which has happened), than for keeping her from "bumping" the bars.
I would have definitely used a mesh one. I wasn't comfortable using a padded bumper, and our doctor recommended against it.

i thought about getting mesh bumpers when LO was going through a phase of getting a limb stuck. i hemmed and hawed until bam! a few weeks later LO wasn't getting stuck anymore. if you really want to get the bumpers, i'd stick with mesh.

I've gotta agree with @Mrs. Jacks: on this one. They figure it out after getting bumped or stuck a few times, and the risks are just too awful.

@Littlebit: I know she will soon! When she is in the crib not sleeping her legs/hands, everything sticks out. When/if we ST then she'll be moving around for sure!

We used regular bumpers for LO1. For LO2, I have a breathable one that's called a crib liner.
I hated the regular ones when it came to changing sheets. It was a pain. And there are certainly risks.

Not worth the risk, in my opinion. Your LO will figure out how not to get stuck or bump her head, in the same way she'll figure out how to lay back down when she first starts sitting or standing on her own.

I've never seen a kid really harm themselves by bumping into a crib wall. Getting strangled seems to me like a much more real risk!
You also said LO slept in tummy " without issues"- what issues were you looking for? The risk is SIDS...

Absolutely not worth the risk to me. Then again, we don't even have a crib, so it's not an issue.

My DD has gotten stuck to the point of needing rescued twice and bumped herself falling once. Not worth the risk for us but everyone has different comfort levels.

We never had bumpers and never needed them because we use a sleep sack, so LO can't get her legs in the slats anyway.

I used the airwrap brand of mesh bumpers and thought they were awesome while LO was still young enough not to be standing up. Once she started standing up and hitting her head on the actual rails, I temporarily put her in a travel cot in her bedroom til she got over it.

LO has always been in a sleep sack. We never had an issue with slats. She figured it out pretty quickly and she is definitely a baby who moves around. I don't think bumpers are worth the risk.

We did the breathable velcro mesh bumpers for about a month when our LO was getting stuck. It made me nervous, but at least there were no strings to worry about and we wrapped it around the outside of the crib so he couldn't get stuck inbetween (if that makes sense) - I found them at Babies R Us.

@Mrs. Jacks: Thanks for posting this. We have the mesh bumpers because I thought the risk was in suffocation. We're going to remove them asap.

I second the sleep sack suggestion. My LO was in one of those forever and never had any issue with getting stuck or anything. We didn't use bumpers at all.

We never needed them, and C has always been a mover in the crib. I would have considered the mesh ones if it was an ongoing problem of limbs getting stuck, but it really has never once been an issue.

Not worth the risk to me! J had plenty of head bangs and getting limbs caught in the slats but he was always fine and it was never a big deal. I'm surprised that bumpers are still on the market considering the strong medical support rallied against them.

Never had bumpers and never had an issue. Once or twice I found her napping with her arm or leg sticking out the bars of the crib but haven't had that happen in months. She has never hurt her head or any other part of her body.

Not worth the risk to me! M went through a little phase where she was banging into the sides but she figured it out quickly and in 2.5 years she got her leg stuck once which we got unstuck quickly.

We have never used bumpers for both of my LOs. Occasionally one of the kids bumped their head, but it's really no big deal. My MIL used bumpers when babysitting my nephew (after we had discussed that we would NOT be using them). One day she found my nephew napping with his head wedged under the bumper that had come loose. That could have gone really bad really fast and she finally removed the bumpers after that incident.

Random question - are bumpers ever ok, like when the baby turns one? Or just never?

I considered bumpers when my LO was just learning to sit up and kept falling back and smacking her head and screaming. But it didn't seem worth the risk and that stage only lasted like 2-3 weeks. They figure out how to not bop themselves pretty quick.
