I can't have chocolate. I miss brownies! I've seen recipes for vanilla and lemon brownies, but I'm scared if I try them I'll be disappointed and they'll be nothing like brownies. Anybody try non chocolate brownies? Do you have a good recipe?

Oh man, that is terrible you can't have chocolate! I would look for recipes for Blonde brownies. I've had those and they are really good.

Like blondies? Those are yummy! But they don't taste like brownies...they taste more like the cookie part of chocolate chip cookies, in my experience...but still good!

Yes - I like Blondies even better than Brownies! You could put in caramel and macadamia nuts or whatever you like.

@hilsy85: Mmmmm..... I never get to have chocolate chip cookies either so I would love that!

Hi ArtBee. Neither will taste like brownies simply because they don't have the cocoa taste or same types of ingredients. BUT, lemon bars and blondies are so fantastic in their own right..... you should try both and look at this as an adventure!

Blondies are so good! They usually have chocolate chips in them but you could substitute caramel or butterscotch or peanut butter chips! Mmmmm.

This is my go to blondies recipe: http://www.marthastewart.com/315631/halloween-blondies You can omit the M&Ms for something else. I love blondies, so good.

@pelikila: @artbee: YES! The orange brownies are awesome! I reduce the sugar by 1/2 cup I think (whatever it suggests in the comments) and use a way more zest than the recipe calls for, and they are always a hit.
Not really a brownie, but I make kick ass lemon bars (super buttery shortbread bottom and super lemony top - again with a ton of zest). It's not really the same as a brownie, but still a good substantial bar treat

Ohh, blondies are amazing! I like to put dried cranberries and almonds in mine! There are an infinite number of things you can mix in!
I also like changing up lemon bars with other citrus fruit....especially limes (but grapefruits are good too!).

Can you have carob instead of chocolate? DOn't know much about it to be honest, but it's used as a sub for chocolate.
I've had orange brownies, they're gross!

I don't know what blondies are but butterscotch brownies are flippin' amazing!

@looch: Carob just isn't the same. And DH is allergic to it so whatever I make with carob he can't eat.

I vote that you try momofuku's crack pie! Kind of the consistency of a very dense, fudgy brownie!

@mrs. wagon: Yum! Unfortunately that's another one that DH can't eat, he's lactose intolerant.
