Maybe things have changed but when I was growing up I don't ever remember thinking "Wow I wish I looked like Barbie"
My DD has the Disney princess barbies and I think they are cute. If she asked for a "normal" size Barbie I would buy it but probably wouldn't on my own

Yes! Would definitely buy my daughter normal sized Barbies! I don't think I ever wanted to look like Barbie, but I think the point of it is that Barbie idealizes standards of beauty that are not normal or realistic (or even possible!).

@Mamaof2: Agreed. I played with Barbies A LOT, but I never strived to look like her. It was all "play", I knew she wasn't real.

I think "normal Barbie" looks kind of athletic and cool. I'd buy it.

I kinda like normal Barbie's look, but I'd probably end up getting regular Barbies just because there are SO many accessories for her. I love how Barbie has so many professions like Astronaut, Doctor, Teacher, ectect. I will definitely never buy my kids "Bratz" dolls.

Wow, these look great! I actually thought Barbie looked bizarre as a child (my mom had a boyish figure and never wore makeup or heels), so I preferred my mom's old Skipper doll, which looked more like a real person to me.
Lack of accessories could actually be a benefit - less emphasis on collecting additional things and more on imaginative play.

@Woolly Mammoth: @pui: the guy who made her said he'll start on the accessories train once he's kind of seen the success of the dolls I think (if I'm remembering right!)
@bisous: exactly - I agree. It's about representations of women in popular culture I think....less of an individual child wanting or not wanting to look like Barbs and more about changing societal perceptions

I never thought of barbie looking weird as a kid but she weirds me out as an adult. It's such a strange caricature of a woman to be giving to little girls, part of me says meh what's the big deal I played with them as a little girl, but I cant 'get over how bizarre it is to see little girls playing with them. So I'd be more likely to buy a more realistically shaped version.
