We have a lazy postman that consistently has been leaving our curbside mailbox open, and placing packages on the opening of the mailbox where they can easily be stolen, rained on, damaged. He did this again today, and I've had enough. We are at this guy's mercy, and we want to go about it in a careful manner. We want our last ditch effort to be filing a complaint to the post office. In the meantime, would a note kindly asking him to place packages by our front door and to ensure our mailbox is closed be sufficient?

is there any way you can put springs on your mailbox door for it to auto-close?

weird... I have no idea what I'd do!! Definitely perks to living in rentals/apartments, they are locked mailboxes!

Do you have a relationship with your mailman? When I grew up in the suburbs, we would give him cookies and leave notes... he ended up adopting one of our dogs!

I would kill him with kindness - maybe leave a little package of something thanking him and then asking your "favor" which is not a favor it's common sense...If you don't kiss a little butt he will just blow you off and do a worse job.

I think leaving a very nicely worded note is the best thing to try!

I had a mail lady constantly leave our boxes ON OUR CURB by the street instead of at our door and finally one day I caught her and went out and took a piece out of her (verbally). I couldn't help myself: I had opened one too many wet,soggy packages!
That was awhile ago: she stopped doing it she no longer waves or says hello to us (even when my DH does). But I don't care... -
I must not have patience, I would just report him to the supervisor. I had a postman stealing packages from me and I reported him and they finally were able to track down the packages. 7 packages ripped open with everything gone. Anyways I would for sure report him! Sometimes those postman just tick me off. The refuse to deliver to my mom if there is a car parked like 15 feet of the mailbox.

I would just call the USPS and let them handle it. Surely you aren't the only one he's doing this to!

Be careful before adding springs to the box. The USPS has pretty specific guidelines on "legal" mailboxes (note that you'll never see them opening from the bottom, just from the top, for example), to protect the mail carriers from weird things (like their hands getting caught when a box springs closed, I would guess). Just a thought.

A couple of days ago, he delivered mail to the wrong addresses on our street. WOW. People in our neighborhood are wondering wtf is up. There's probably a new mailman, or one that is covering for our usual one on vacation.

I had to file a complaint today. I hated doing it. I feel like an ass, but he left our mailbox open and I am over it. I called the 1-800 number and they insisted I give them my name, address, and phone number. I refused several times over, and he eventually gave in and submitted the complaint. I realllly don't like complaining! I don't want to get him in trouble, but I needed to do something.
