I had three grandparents live well into their 90's. One grandmother lived on her own until she 92(stopped driving at 90), then moved to an assisted living facility followed by a nursing home, where she passed away after a stroke, she was 97 when she died. My other grandmother lived on her own, with her husband until she was 90 and then moved to a nursing facility/assisted living for dementia. She lived there for several years before she passed away. My grandfather lived on his own until he was 92, moved to a nursing home after a stroke and passed away there as well.

My maternal grandparents moved into a CRC when my grandmother first started having issues with Alzheimers. They lived in the Independent Living, and then she had a stroke and an MI, and was transferred to the nursing unit. She died on the nursing unit, but my grandfather lived for another 8-10 years, first in the Independent Living (till he was 97!) and then they moved him to the Assisted Living after a fall broke his hip/shoulder. He died in his apartment in the Assisted Living. My paternal grandfather died before I was born. My paternal grandmother died in a long-term acute care hospital, where she had been on a ventilator from emphysema.

I hope someday (like when the kids are out of daycare) Hubs and I can purchase a long-term care insurance plan, which helps pay for in-home services. Because traditional health insurance does not pay for them (other than skilled services following a hospitalization)!
