That's NOT a cliche NYC location? ie not Central Park!
Looking for cool family photo spots that only New Yorkers know about. Haven't lived there in soo long I'm so out of the loop.

Do you want it to be in Manhattan?
I think Brooklyn Bridge Park http://www.brooklynbridgepark.org/the-park is amazing for photos. It's not a best kept secret or anything, but there are so many spots for photos: the Carousel, Main St., the waterfront promenade, Fulton Ferry. You can get the family in shots with the Manhattan skyline and the Brooklyn Bridge!
There's also this cool brick building shell right near the park: http://www.nytimes.com/2012/05/23/nyregion/deal-allows-development-in-brooklyn-bridge-park.html?_r=0
ETA: Also, it's right in Dumbo and there are cobblestone streets here, so that could be cool, too.
I would also say perhaps Battery City Park and maybe somewhere in Tribeca.

@mrsjazz: totally forgot about Bklyn Bridge Park. I want to take M to that carousel, looks amazing!!
Doesn't have to be in Manhattan. Dumbo is a little overdone....

@regberadaisy: Ha. I don't really know what's overdone, most of the family photos I see are at people's homes or in photo studios.

@mrsjazz: Dumbo is so popular for engagement and wedding photos. Especially bc of the cobblestones and the Manhattan skyline in the background.
Have you taken LO to that park before? Looks like so much fun! Must go next time I'm home.

@regberadaisy: Right, yes it is popular for engagement and wedding photos...but not for family photos!! HAHA. I don't know.
What type of vibe do you want for the photos?
Yep, we've been to the park. She was too young to really enjoy it, but we may go back this summer.

the cobblestone streets of the meatpacking district and the west village are my favorite parts of the city!

5 Pointz in Queens is photographed a lot but not usually for family portraits. It's not my style personally, but would be pretty bad a$$!
Or maybe you could have the session on a Circle Line Boat cruise or the staten island ferry? You could have the skyline in the background but also be eating ice cream on the boat....

@QueensBee: haha that would be pretty bad ass! That would be an awesome e shoot!
But I want more of a "family" vibe. Which is why the carousel would be awesome! So something outdoor.

Have you ever been up to the Cloisters? It's way uptown (like 190th street) in Fort Tryon Park but there are gorgeous gardens in the park and river views. So pretty!

@regberadaisy: I agree with @mrsjazz's suggestion of Brooklyn Bridge park!! You don't need to go over to Dumbo, there are a lot of pretty parts in Brooklyn Heights--we live right there and love love love the park. Or on the Promenade, which has cobblestones, benches, pretty trees, and a great view of downtown Manhattan.
Riverside Park is also really pretty (that's where we did our engagement shots), and if you want some cool architecture, you could go to Columbia's campus!
ETA you could also do some shots in a playground? Maybe the Children's Playground near 72nd st? Or In front of some brownstones (so many pretty ones in West Village and in Brooklyn heights!).

@mrsjazz: @hilsy85: Brooklyn Bridge Park is a perfect site for a future NYC Bee meetup!

I second @MrsBee. We took our engagement pics in and around the streets of the West Village and got some really cool and different shots.
@MrsSCB: I've been saying for YEARS that I want to go to the Cloisters and still haven't done it! I think we're going to take Lady M there this summer or early fall.

We had a family/maternity session in our old hood on the UWS... so we went to places that were special to us... NYC's tiniest park on 71st and West End (we lucked out there was a cherry blossom tree in full bloom at the time too!), the subway stop at 72nd and Amsterdam (where we spontaneously went to Gray's Papaya), and Riverside Park South by the Hudson and Pier I. We were supposed to also go to Levain Bakery and Lincoln Center, but time didn't allow. It's a very family-friendly area and I loved how the pics came out. Choose somewhere special to your family!

@fancyfunction: I was the same way, we meant to go for awhile and then finally did last Spring. I didn't know there were such beautiful gardens in the park around it, just flowers everywhere! I definitely recommend it. It was a hike from Jersey City but well worth it
