Are the original UGGs water/weather proof?
My niece needs new winter boots this year so we're getting her a pair for her birthday. While she's here we were browsing online she picked the original UGG style by EMU. I thought I would just get her UGGs then.
Anyway, are the original UGGs water / weather proof?
Can she step in a wet puddle of snow mush repeatedly and not get her feet wet?

@locavore_mama: You can buy weatherproofing spray for them, but they're not actually weatherproof. If you don't use the spray, they would actually get ruined when stepping in water or snow.

They are not waterproof but you can buy a waterproofing spray.
She would be able to walk in rain/puddles/snow without her feet getting wet, but I would recommend getting them cleaned professionally at the end of the season.

Classic Uggs are not water proof and after repeatedly stepping in slushy puddles she'll get a gross salt ring around them.

Do they need to be snow boots? I wouldn't wear the classic uggs in snow.

hm. OK. I'm not getting her UGGs then. For that price I feel like they should be weather proof. I'll talk to her about it and get her Sorels instead which was the other pair she liked.
Maybe I'll get her UGGs as a Christmas present if I can find it for under $50.
@looch: yup, we're in the NE and she walks to and from school every day. I think it's important she has a good pair of snow boots for the snow days. NYC isn't great about plowing!

They really soak through when wet!

@Mrs. Champagne: yes! We got Sorels for the niece and nephews 2 Christmases ago. Of course they have outgrown them.

@locavore_mama: I have Uggs and Sorels. I rarely ever Uggs on wet days because I don't want to ruin them. Sorels are warm, waterproof, last forever, and they have cute styles. If there's a pair she likes, definitely get her Sorels!

I live in Chicago and wear my Uggs for cold only- water will ruin them even if you have them waterproofed. For the snow/rain I wear Hunters. They might be too much than you want to spend (especially if she is still growing) but I think if you are wanting something for snow you are better off with wellies or Sorels.

@dookie32: yea I got them Sorels last time but since she asked for "UGGs" this time I thought I would look into it. I'd rather spend more money so they don't have cold wet feet all day at school!

No! I wish. They will get water stained and water will go through them. You can buy water/weather proofing spray. I have not done that so I don't know how well it works.

Oh gawd, like others have said, Uggs are in NO way snow/wet boots. Get her a good pair of Sorels and call it good--those bad boys will stand up to anything!

The original UGGs were designed to be worn by surfers on the beaches of Australia... so no, not meant for winter wear at all.
I have a pair of UGGs made of leather that are waterproof and very warm. I've had them for 3 years and they are great!

To your last sentence, NO. They are not water, snow, slush proof. I've gotten my feet wet plenty of times. Weather-proof in terms of the cold, I'd say they do a really good job! But they were originally surer boots, so I wouldn't expect them to.
Now, my Sorels have withstood rain, snow, slush puddles, cold etc. Highly recommend for that!

I wear them on some cold winter days and no, not weather proof. They get wet in snow/slush and take forever to dry. Also if you walk on sidewalks that are salted, they get an ugly salt line on them along wherever they were wet.
Highly recommend Sorel for a real winter boot, as @shopaholic said!

As everyone has already said, nope! Not waterproof. The sole is also not really textured, so they can be extremely slippery on snow and ice, even if the snow isn't deep enough to get them wet.
Uggs does make actual winter boots, which are *AWESOME*.
