If we travel at Christmas, we'll most likely take the car seat but I've heard if you keep the box and put the car seat in the box, it will stay more protected. Has anyone done this?
This car seat box would be baggage checked and not gate checked.

No experience, but I know that UPS/FedEx isn't treating those seats nicely ... I imagine the box would be more protective?! I'd do it. (maybe call the airline to be certain that's allowed)
We used the red bag (no protection) the few times we checked the seat. On a positive note, there was never even a scuff on the bag, so I felt like it wasn't tossed around too much.
