For those of you who are either not vaccinating or vaccinating on a delayed schedule - would you vaccinate if there were an outbreak in your area?
Minnesota seems to be having an outbreak in whooping cough this year, over 2,000 cases reported and in Wisconsin over 3,000 cases reported. All the counties deemed as having pertussis outbreaks are far away from me... but it still worries me. But I definitely didn't want to vaccinate him at all for at least the first year.

I decided not to vaccinate now but W is actually getting her pertussis shot next week because of the out break.

@Coco Bee: We are delaying vaccines until LO is 6 months old but if our area had an outbreak then we will vaccinate.

Absolutely. Like @mediagirl: I'm pro vaccine anyway. But I just can't imagine how terrible I would feel if my baby caught whooping cough and I knew I had the chance to prevent it (or at least seriously decrease the risk) and I didn't do it.

Pertussis kills babies. I'd want my little one protected as soon as possible.

I'm pro vaccine too, so from my perspective it's kind of a chicken/egg thing... if there's an outbreak, it's likely caused by parents not vaccinating or delaying vaccinations in the first place? Unless it's a new disease that's not covered by a vaccine...
I would definitely vaccinate!

Infants are the biggest risk group for whooping cough. Adults can handle pertussis, but it can be deadly to babies. While you could wait until it comes to your area, there's no way of knowing when until it is already there and spreading.
My NP said that the pertussis vaccine is completely dead. There is no way the baby can get it from it - it's very safe!
I got a tdap booster a few days ago, and I'm very happy baby will have some of my antibodies when it's born in a few months because we have a bad outbreak here too.

@jedeve: my worry about the vaccine isn't that he would get pertussis from the vaccine. It's the ingredients in the vaccine.

@Coco Bee: are you worried about preservatives? Either way, the chance that he might get pertussis is so much higher given that her is an outbreak. Seems extremely risky to delay in order to remain preservative free.

One of them does has thimerosal, but all have formeldahyde, aluminum and most have weird animal parts - like bovine casein, calf serum and monkey kidney. That kinda freaks me out a little 
And then there are articles like this that come out and just confuse me - so much information is just so contradicting:

If I planned to take my baby out in public, or in any way interact with the public, I would want her vaccinated. People travel, and you have no idea where the person ahead of you in line at the grocery store was the day before, and who they interacted with.
IMO, there isn't really such thing as an outbreak "in your area" or not. Diseases don't see state and county lines - if there are considerable outbreaks in your state, they ARE in your area. There just haven't been enough to make the news.

While I can understand the "oogy" factor in things like calf serum and monkey kidney, in reality I don't think it is that much different than eating a burger or a chicken breast. It is just a different part of an animal, and most likely safe to consume. I'd much rather give my baby monkey kidney remnants than potentially leave her at risk for catching whooping cough and dying. Absolutely no doubt about it.

@mrbee: If the cause for the outbreak was specifically because of people choosing not to vaccinate, I have to say that makes me very scared. This is the thing that worries me about the vaccine conversation. If it isn't quite time for my child to be vaccinated yet, I hate that her risk of contracting something is higher because someone else opted out. That seems really unnecessarily dangerous for my child. (Apologies in advance if this sounds offensive to anyone. That isn't my intention)

@Coco Bee: I agree with you about all the information out there and it being confusing. I just read an article that said a study done in California in 2011 showed that 2 out of 3 people who had Pertussis were fully or partially vaccinated for it. ??????

@Coco Bee: The pertussis vaccine doesn't last forever like others, and I think this outbreak has made people realize it might not last as long as they thought. It's easy to see stuff like "they didn't test how long it lasted" and think "why not??" but then again, you don't go around injecting 10 year olds with the disease to see if they get it, you know?? And so without a natural outbreak, it's hard to measure.
If you want a good reliable source for articles, try pubmed.gov . (I know, I know it ends in ".gov" but it's not propaganda or anything, it's this law that any research that receives gov't money has to be published for the public)

I totally get where you are coming from. I'm all for alternative/delayed vaccination choices, but since we're moving to a third world country next Fall, I'm choosing to give our LO a lot more vaccines than I otherwise would, because I know it's very likely they will be exposed.
If you are living in an area where there is an outbreak, you have to do what you feel is right.

I'm looking into alternate vaccine schedules too, and it would be a toss up for me. It could be safer to get the vaccine for whatever was going around--one shot would still be much gentler for baby's body than the usual dozen. On the other hand, the shot wouldn't be a guarantee, as vaccines fail and eventually wear off anyway.
I don't think there's an easy answer to this for anyone who has reservations about vaccines.

Im doing delayed vaccinations, but made sure baby bird was vaccinated for whooping cough right away. That is some serious stuff I, like you, worry about other things that may happen due to vaccinating, so it is SO tough when you wanna do whats right for your baby.

I plan on doing a delayed schedule, but yes, if there was an outbreak I would definitely vaccinate. We plan on doing the whooping cough one on time actually because of all of the cases.... Me, dh and my mom all just got the TDAP in the last few weeks
