LO's 3rd birthday will likely be on the rooftop of our building. It's a pretty big space with a concrete/stone floor, a few tables, and a lot of lounge chairs. I am trying to think of activities I can set up for 7-8 kids to keep them occupied for an hour and a half or so. It will be fire truck/fire fighter themed. Right now, my only idea is to get large plastic bins and fill them with sand and bring up some of our construction vehicles for digging (not fire themed but I feel like would be fun?). Any other ideas?

What about finding blank fire truck shapes and letting the kids paint them? You can set up brushes and washable paint. I think flat wooden fire truck shapes should be fairly easy to find! I also saw firemen hats at dollar tree! They probably have them at Party City or Oriental Trading Company?

Do you have one of those pop up tunnels? I think I've seen one before that's a fire truck? I suggest that because when local firefighters came to dd daycare for a community helper day, one of the things they did was to teach the kids to get low on the ground and army crawl. So you can call that like a "stop, drop and crawl!" Station!

@hilsy85: we had a pinata at LO's 3rd birthday and she looooved it! the kids mostly had no idea what to do so we didn't blindfold them or anything but it was really entertaining. I vote pinata! (we got ours on amazon)

Do you have a local department that makes appearances? There's several around here that'll come to kid birthday's with the truck if they have time.

@mrs.kiwi: well it'll be in Oct so could be chilly--wouldn't want anyone getting cold and wet! But if it were summer love that idea!@BananaPancakes: yes I have thought of this as the "main entertainment"--need to actually talk to someone to see if they do this!

Is there space to set up an obstacle course? In addition to the tunnel, you can get some cones, hula hoops, etc.
Another idea is to set up a photo booth, do you have any dress up costumes?

And maybe as part of their favors you send home a fire safety packet. I asked daycare when I found out firefighters were coming and the firefighters came with a packet to send them home with. Tips to teach your preschoolers what to do in the event of a fire at home. I bet if you reached out early enough they can forward your information pertinent to apartment living .

@looch: there is room, but it's all concrete/stone flooring so there's no padding if kids fall and I don't want anyone to hurt themselves. I was thinking about getting a few fire fighter costumes, as well, maybe 3 would be enough for 7-8 kids (taking turns obviously). And we have a police officer costume and maybe I can find a few more.

@regberadaisy: I know our fire station gives out free fire safety coloring books and maybe they'd bring them if they do a demo.
