DH and I need to buy a gift for our niece (turning 9). The only hints we've been given are "some kind of outside toy"
Any ideas? Is a kite dumb?

Chinese jump rope. You can do it with a chair if no grown ups are around. Binoculars. Razor Scooter.

Our niece is turning 9 and is into science. What about one of those kits where a caterpillar turns into a butterfly?
I guess it also depends on how much you want to spend?

@808love @REGBERADAISY: Thanks for the ideas ladies! I was thinking in the $25 range.
@silva: Thanks I just needed some affirmation that kites weren't too babyish or something!
@erinbaderin: Ooo, good idea! We're in the midwest so they would definitely get some use in the winter.
@anagram: They have a pool, so maybe I will look into something fun to use in the water?
@josina: Those chalk stencils look perfect, I know she loves coloring and crafts.

@winter_wonder: I see adults flying really cool and complex kites at the park all the time

Since they have a pool, how about a cool novelty floatie? I've seen funny ones like pretzels, pizza slices, donuts, and swans.
A slip 'n slide is always a hit. I've seen fort building kits that look awesome.

For some reason my immediate thought was some sort of little garden / growing kit. But I don't know if those exist for kids.
A nice kite would be cool too. I remember flying kites with my dad when I was maybe that age and loving it. It's one of my best memories! We did it in a football field near home, took them to the beach, etc.
