When you started going out and about with your recently potty trained child, did you take a portable potty with you? If so, which one did you take? Looking for recommendations before I dare leave the house with this kid in underwear

We bring this to places that have a restroom (I don't love it - it's sort of flimsy):

And this to places that don't (playground, park, etc):

Apparently the second one now can fold out to double as a potty ring, so I'd probably just get that one!

We have the Oxo one: http://www.amazon.com/OXO-Tot-2--Potty-Travel/dp/B00NFJICGM/ref=sr_1_1?s=baby-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1439563184&sr=1-1&keywords=oxo+portable+potty
It works as a portable potty and a potty seat to put on a public toilet. Also, I was nervous about taking DS out too, but it's been easy ducking into random restaurants when he needs to go - people seem to be very nice about letting toddlers use their restrooms!

@birdofafeather: Is it just me or do you find it hard to pull the legs back out from the standing position? I feel like I'm about to break it every time!
pineapple / 12053 posts
@JoJoGirl: It does feel like you're breaking it, but the legs are meant to pop in and out so once I realized that, I pulled harder! Ha.

@Rainbow Sprinkles: Us too! She can hold it long enough to get to a public potty.

My LO used public restrooms. I bought a Potette but she never wanted to use it.

@BlueWolverine: @Rainbow Sprinkles: I'm glad this is possible! The idea of carrying around a seat or potty grosses me out for some reason. Do you wipe down the seat or anything? I don't usually worry about it for myself but I feel like maybe I should bust out a clorox wipe first or something?

I had no idea people carried around portable potty seats. I just always assumed use the normal bathroom!
pear / 1510 posts
@Mrs. Lion: I don't. I pick the cleanest one and we just make sure to wash hands. I figure that if it doesn't hurt me, it won't hurt her. I might have put some TP on the seat of a questionable one for her, but only once.
grapefruit / 4455 posts
Even though I would call myself something of a germophobe I don't bring anything special. I've used a Clorox wipe. But usually I just cover the seat up well and help hold her up for now.

@Rainbow Sprinkles: @BlueWolverine: @Mrs. Lion: @Mamasig: we travel a lot, my kid has been potty training for what feels like her whole life and that pottette plus with bags has been a lifesaver for us. we don't use it as a potty seat on public restrooms, but as a potty in the back of our car. it comes with bags that absorb the pee and then you just toss the bag out. i WISH my kid could hold her pee consistently or would tell me when we were in the store, but she doesn't, so this gives me another opportunity for her to go that's not me holding her up over the side of the road. i also have a really small bladder, so i'm prepared that this is just part of life. luckily, she doesn't have a problem going in the public restroom either, but this is just another spot for us.

For us it's a lifesaver for long outings - we often walk for 30 mins to a playground play for an hour or more, then walk 30 mins home. There's no public restroom there. It would be IMPOSSIBLE without a portable potty.

@birdofafeather: @JoJoGirl: I'm thinking these are great for Mardi Gras parades! Note to self for next year.

@birdofafeather: I'm definitely glad this is an option! I didn't realize it came with bags. I always wondered what you did with the contents afterwards!

@JoJoGirl: I have actually broken one of the little knobs off but it still works fine!

Thanks guys. We are out and about a lot and honestly, I don't think there are that many public bathrooms that we can get to quickly when she is so recently trained.
@Beehive: Ahhhh yes random restaurants is a good idea!
@Mrs. Lion: public restrooms gross me out But I will obviously have to overcome that for my kids' sake. I think the ones around here are especially gross.
@JoJoGirl: Similar for us, long outings with walks or transit, hard to find bathrooms.

@birdofafeather: Yeah I am worried about get ability to hold it in at the start. I imagine pee soaked stroller seat.
pineapple / 12053 posts
@Mamasig: TMI, I've definitely peed in it before on a long trip. But there are travel-johns that are meant for adults. Ha.

@Mrs. Lion: yeah, I'm not really sure how people do it without the bags?
blogger / grapefruit / 4836 posts
@travelgirl1: I can understand that! I grew up in/live in the heart of child friendly suburbia....our bathrooms are always pretty clean here (thankfully!!)
eggplant / 11287 posts
@Mrs. Lion: nope, I don't wipe it down. I just am very stern with her not touching ANYTHING (I have her hold my hands because she's tempted to hold onto the actual toilet seat) and we both just wash hands really well after.

@JoJoGirl: So she just pees on the sidewalk in the potty?
grapefruit / 4321 posts
LO has never had an issue holding it long enough to get to a public restroom.
GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts
@hilsy85: I get that but is LO just going on a sidewalk in front of everyone?
cantaloupe / 6206 posts
@Smurfette: Not on the sidewalk - if we're at the playground or a park, we'll go into the woods or behind a tree or something.
squash / 13764 posts
@Smurfette: I generally trybto go to a quiet corner or the park, but if he has to go and were on the sidewalk I will pull the stroller in front of him so he's somewhat shielded. Or I've done it in the car as well.
GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts
@JoJoGirl: @hilsy85: This makes me glad that we have to drive everywhere and our park has a bathroom. It sounds like a pain!
pear / 1616 posts
we bring the soft potty ring around. shes small for her age so its hard for her to sit on the toilet without some kind of ring. and also i don't have to worry about wiping the toilet seat! when we go out tho we usually bring the stroller so its easy to carry around.
cantaloupe / 6206 posts
@Smurfette: Totally not a pain I've only done it once so far (our playground with no public bathroom), and it was just a pit stop before we got into the car in the grass near the parking lot. No big deal!
GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts
@JoJoGirl: well pain/gross. Maybe I want to just keep her in diapers forever. How is she doing?
cantaloupe / 6206 posts
@Smurfette: Pretty well? She had a pee accident today and two yesterday, but no accidents for 2 days before that and all poops have been in the potty. We're going on a 4.5 hour road trip tomorrow though, so that'll be fun...
GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts
@JoJoGirl: I consider the pooping a huge success so she is doing great if you ask me. Good luck this weekend. R keeps asking DH if he is done with her bathroom. Ha! I can't wait for it to be done and then we get going with this.

No, we just got LO to use the public restroom. I thought about buying a portable seat thing but didn't want LO to depend on it for all our outings.
But, we do keep a potty chair in the backseat of the minivan for super emergencies if there is not a bathroom nearby or something.
