I've noticed more and more ladies on here who are living outside the US. Let's all say hello to each other!
I'm Meg and I'm an American living in Manchester, UK with my British husband. I've been here about 1.5 years.

Hi! I'm Megan and I'm an American, raised overseas, and currently living in Albania with my American husband. We'll probably move soon though.

Well, I guess I'll be Megan #3!! lol. I'm Megan. I'm an American living in Norfolk, UK (smack between Cambridge and Norwich) with my American husband. We are stationed here with the US Air Force. We've been here about 3 months now. We're here until mid-2014.

I'm Missy and am an American living in Australia with my British/Australian husband. I've been in Australia on and off for the past four years and before that, lived in London, UK for three years. I did have a year and a half back in the States during that time but I've been pretty much overseas since 2004.
We're hoping to move back to either the UK to be near my husband's family, or the US to be near my family by the end of next year. Fingers crossed it all works out!
What are the Americans doing for Thanksgiving? I'm so excited to have booked a last minute ticket home for two weeks - arriving home next Tuesday, just in time for Turkey Day!

Hi! I'm Aya, Japanese American from Chicago, currently living in Tokyo, Japan with my American husband. We've been here for a little over 3 years now. Prior to this, we lived in Bangkok for 2 and a half years. My husband works for an international hotel group, which is why we are here.

@mynoahbear- I'm a Midwestern girl too! We're from St. Louis.
@ree723- We're spending Thanksgiving just the 2 of us. I have a tiny 3lb turkey and I'm going to make stuffing and mashed potatoes and gravy... That's about it. I am flying home to spend December and Christmas with my family! SO excited.

Great idea megwag!
I'm looch (I don't post my real name on line) and I live in Switzerland with my Swiss husband and 11 month old son. I've been here since 2008 and we're moving back to the US next year.
Usually I do a Thanksgiving party, but last year I was too pregnant to deal with it and this year we're having our son's 1st birthday party instead. We will be spending 3 weeks in the US at the end of December, looking forward to being back home, but not an 8 hour flight with a 1 year old!

I'm Rae, an American living in Sweden with my Swedish husband. I've been here for 2 years now. We decided on settling down here because it's more family friendly and the paternal benefits are excellent. But the winters are killer!
Last Thanksgiving I cooked a traditional dinner for 10 people, the most I've cooked, ever! It was a success and I intended to make it a new tradition, but this year, we're planning a trip back to California to spend the holidays with my friends and family. I'm counting down the days!

@Ree723: We're having thanksgiving here with my parents. My little sister is flying here for Christmas a well.

@Ree723 I'm not sure. I'm currently pouting
We had planned to go home for a final trip before the baby comes (I'm 24 weeks now), but it isn't happening. I can't even make a traditional feast since my hubs is a pescaterian! I'll make a modified Thanksgiving meal for the 2 of us and we'll skype with my family.
I'm especially sad because my 2 cousins are also pregnant (one has just announced!) and it would have been so fun to compare notes/burgeoning bumps with them... aah well.

@mrs.earrings: twins! I'm a kiwi, married to an American! Except, we're moving to the states next month
He has a few other American friends here who all moved over for work, so we're doing a big thanksgiving dinner here.

I didn't realize Thanksgiving was next Thursday. I had to look at my calendar to confirm when my mom told me.
I think we'll just do something small, like a roasted chicken with the traditional sides. I am not much for turkey.
So ladies, I am curious, what was the most difficult adjustment for you all? For me, it was getting used to the products that are available.
pear / 1554 posts
@looch: our first move was from Chicago to bangkok. EVERYTHING was a huge difficult adjustment for me....the language, weather, food. Plus I'm a neat freak and Bangkok is not the most clean city or the nicest smelling. It took me a good 6 months to get somewhat adjusted. The Thai people were so nice and financially, we were great. If there was anything, I couldn't get like food products or lotion or anything, my family or friends would mail it over. By the end of our time there, I really loved living there and was sorry to have to move. My husband was fine from the beginning and helped me a lot.
Moving from Bangkok to Tokyo was definitely a much easier adjustment. The biggest obstacle was language. I'm Japanese but from the US so my Japanese was not good at all. I look Japanese so everyone spoke to me in Japanese and I couldn't understand them. When I told them I don't speak Japanese they just got confused. After 3 years here, my Japanese has gotten quite good so it's no longer that much of a problem.

@looch: The hardest thing for me has been making new friends. I still haven't really made any. Also, the fact that England is so similar to the US in big ways (like most of the language)- sometimes you don't realize the smaller differences and wonder why things don't make sense! Luckily I've got my husband to explain things to me

@looch: Getting used to British food. It's much, much different here than in the states. Things just taste differently. For example, I LOVE Chinese food in the states and I hate it here.

@looch: The weather and people's attitudes, or lack thereof! In Sweden there's "lagom" a term with no English equivalent that means the middle way - not too much, not too little. Lagom is their sense of ideal and epitomizes their culture and attitude. Couple that with the everyday pressures of conformity and it can be a little maddening for a foreigner.
But the nature is breathtaking and it's pretty safe. I do miss the variety of products available elsewhere, but there's always Amazon UK =)

The lack of variety in food is tough for me. I really miss things like mexican and chinese and indian food, and the ingredients just aren't available here. I'll miss sushi so bad when we run out of the seaweed we've brought with us.

Oh yeah, language! I never studied German, I mean, I never thought I would need it, so I studied Spanish, Latin and French.
I've started classes twice and got pretty good before I gave birth, but now, I've stalled. My husband speaks to our son in German and he understands, I need to get on the ball because I don't want them to have conversations and I have to sit on the sidelines!

I speak Albanian decently well, but DH is fluent, to the point they don't know he's American. I rely on him more than I should, which slows my learning down. But on the other hand, we'll probably be moving again in six months or less so...

Hi, I'm Natasha and I'm not American at all - neither is FI hee hee hee. I'm from New Zealand and we're planning to honeymoon and start TTC in America next year - I guess that's our US connection!

Bumping this up for the new international bees out there.
What's new? I've been reading up on local school policies because I hate being the one in the discussion that has nothing to contribute.

Yay! Myself and my DH are both Australians living in Australia...heheheh... we honeymooned in the US in May and fell in LOVE with the place....we have a little fantasy about moving there but its harder than it sounds

Hey everyone! Apparently I missed this the first time around!
I'm in Mexico City, been here five years, married to a Mexican and have a little Mexican/gringo and another on the way. Good to see where everyone is!

Yay for more international bees! Our son is now just over 5 months old and I've finally made some great friends. The community support for new moms here is phenomenal. I can't imagine not visiting the Children's Centre weekly. I also really enjoyed being cared for by a midwife during my pregnancy and the less-medical model was great.

I'm an American in Mexico. We're entering our third year here, had our LO here last year and another one on the way now.
@sloaneandpuffy: I just made the connection...I started following your blog about a year ago.

Hi ladies, I'm British, living in Suffolk, UK with my American husband.
@zippyleaf - If your DH is in the USAF at Lakenheath or Mildenhall you're not far from us! (DH is ex-USAF, that's where we met!)
I used to stalk the boards on WB as "panda_in_England" so I was really excited when HB launched and its nice to see there seems to be much more of an international following over here
